Bob Baxter Retires From Softball Coaching Staff

Educator of More Than 40 Years Steps Down from His Position

BRONX, N.Y.- After a decade of service to the Fordham softball program, Assistant Coach Bob Baxter has announced his retirement.

"I want to thank Fordham for allowing me the opportunity to coach at such an outstanding university for the past ten years," Baxter said.  "To be a part of a program that has turned into the top program in the Northeast, as well as a top-ranking team in the country, has been very fulfilling."

Baxter joined the staff of his daughter, Bridget Orchard, for the 2005 season, helping outfielder Katie Davis earn Atlantic 10 Player of the Year honors and leading Fordham to its first Atlantic 10 Regular Season Championship.

The Binghamton, N.Y., native remained a dedicated member of the staff through 2014, helping the Rams win three Atlantic 10 titles and make four NCAA Regional appearances beginning in 2010.

"We will really miss Coach Baxter and all that he has done for Fordham and the softball program," Orchard said.  "He has spent countless hours on the recruiting trail and is responsible for getting our All-American pitcher Jen Mineau and many outstanding talents that have allowed Fordham national recognition.

"Keeping in touch with alumni and fans of the program, fundraising and promoting Fordham were some of things he worked hard at," Ochard continued.  "His effort, attitude and passion will be missed. Words cannot express all that he has given to this program. I thank him for all that he has done for me personally, professionally and for all the players that he worked so hard with to make sure they and their families had a tremendous opportunity and experience here at Fordham."

An educator of 34 years prior to his arrival at Fordham, Baxter came to Rose Hill after serving in a number of roles in the Binghamton school system.  In over three decades of work, Baxter saw time as a physical education teacher, associate principal and varsity coach for softball, football and track and field.

In his retirement, Baxter plans to reflect upon and write about his experiences in coaching and teaching.
