Steve Sholdra competed in the 2014 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships at Castaic Lake this past weekend, finishing 12th in the 5K race and 22nd in the 10K. It is the second straight year that he competed in the event, taking 15th in the 5K race and 17th in the 10K in 2013.
Sholdra opened the event with the 10K race in Friday, placing 22
nd in a time of 1:55:57.573, just about six seconds behind Jerad Kaskawal but almost 20 seconds in front of Jacob Ores. Andrew Gemmell won the race in a time of 1:50:45.927.
On Sunday Sholdra competed in the 5K where he took 12
th in a time of 55:44.607, 1:49 better than his time from 2013. Unlike the 10K race, he beat Kaskawal to the line by just 0.370 seconds. The race was won by Alex Meyer in a time of 55:34.303.
For his exploits in 2013, Sholdra was named a 2013 Long Distance All-American by U.S. Masters Swimming.
