Box ScoreHempstead, N.Y. (April 9, 2014) – The Fordham University men's tennis team traveled to Long Island on Wednesday to face Hofstra University, falling to the Pride, 5-2, at the Hofstra Outdoor Tennis Center.
The Rams opened the match dropping the doubles points, losing two of the three doubles matches.
Matty Najfeld and
Michael Puntillo won the first completed match for Fordham with an 8-4 win over Leo Pires and Matthew Gemmell at third doubles but
Pedro Alonzo and
Max Peara fell to Joseph Erichsen and Beau Wills at second doubles, 8-6, before
Alastair Barnes and
Mischa Koran battled with Ari Richman and Adrien Bailly at first doubles before falling, 9-8.
In singles play, Najfeld and Koran picked up wins in straight sets for Fordham with Najfeld defeating Richman, 7-5, 7-5 at first singles and Koran besting Stuart Macleod, 6-2, 6-2 at the sixth position.
Puntillo and
Pedro Alonzo almost picked up singles wins for the Rams as each played to a third set. Puntillo dropped the first set at fourth singles to Gemmell, 6-4, before coming back to win the second, 6-1. But Puntillo fell at the third set, 6-4. Alonzo lost the first set at fifth singles to Erichsen, 6-3, but rebounded to win the second, 7-5, before falling in the third, 6-4.
The Rams return to action on Friday, April 11, as they host Sacred Heart University on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts at 3:00 PM.
