Women’s Tennis Opens Atlantic 10 Championships with Win over URI

Rams advance to play top-seeded VCU on Friday

Mason, Ohio (April 24, 2014) – The Fordham University women's tennis squad, seeded eighth, opened play at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championships at Lindner Family Tennis Center with a 4-0 win over ninth-seeded Rhode Island on Thursday and will now play the top seeded VCU Rams on Friday at 10:00 AM.
 
Fordham opened the match taking the doubles point, winning both completed doubles matches. Sarah Ali and Elliesa Ball teamed up to win at first doubles over Nithila Asokaraj and Kathleen Uy, 8-1, and then Hanna Fritzinger and Bella Genkina defeated Taylor Holden and Jordan Rucks, 8-4, at third doubles. Julie Leong and Angelika Dabu were ahead of Galina Chernykh and Elizaveta Sadovnikov at second doubles, 6-4, when play was halted.
 
Fordham then won the match by taking the first three completed singles matches. Bella got things started with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sadovnikov at fourth singles and then Leong defeated Asokaraj at the fifth spot, 6-4, 6-3, to put Fordham up 3-0. 3. Dabu clinched the match for Fordham with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Uy at third singles.
 
Destiny Grunun was leading her singles match when play was stopped, taking the first set of sixth singles from Rucks, 6-3, and leading in the second, 5-0.
