Bronx, N.Y. (April 21, 2014) – The Fordham University women's tennis team concluded its 2013-2014 regular season today by hosting NYIT, the eleventh ranked team in the NCAA Division II, hoping to extend its three-game winning streak. But the Rams fell to the Bears, 5-2, on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts on Monday.
The Rams opened the match dropping the doubles point, losing all three doubles matches.
Sarah Ali and
Elliesa Ball were upended at first doubles by Justyna Krol and Alessia Rossetti, 8-2,
Angelika Dabu and
Julie Leong fell to Sara Burinato and Alexandra Borgenhoff at second doubles, 8-6, and
Hanna Fritzinger and
Bella Genkina dropped third doubles to Gabriela Siembab and Madalina Florea, 8-5.
Fordham picked up two points in singles play, winning at second and fifth singles. Ali took second singles from Rossetti in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, while Genkina defeated Borgenhoff at the fifth spot, taking the first set, 6-2, dropping the second, 6-2, but coming back to win the third, 6-2.
The Rams also had a chance to pick up a point at first singles as Ball took the first set from Krol, 6-4, but lost the next two by the same score, and at the fourth position where Leong won the first set from Benyadi, 6-1, but lost the second, 6-1, and the third, 6-4..
The Rams will close out the season at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship which starts on Thursday, April 24, at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
