Charlottesville, Va. (April 17, 2014) – The Fordham University men's tennis team opened play at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championships with a 4-1 upset win over St. Bonaventure University at the Boar's Head Sports Club on Thursday. It was Fordham's second opening round win at the championships in the past three years.

The Rams, seeded tenth, opened play by taking the doubles point from the seventh-seeded Bonnies, winning both completed doubles matches. Kuba Kowalski and Matty Najfeld got things started with an 8-2 win over Eduardo Irizarry and Javier Ortiz at second doubles before J.J. Tauil and Michael Puntillo clinched the doubles point for Fordham with an 8-5 victory over Trevor Haskell and Timothy DeSanto at the third position.

Fordham then took three of the first four completed singles matches to win the match. The Rams dropped the first completed singles match when Ramazan Nureev defeated Tauil, 6-2, 6-2 at third singles but Fordham then won three straight, beginning with Barnes' 6-4, 6-3 win over Irizarry at the second position. Max Peara gave the Rams a 3-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Haskell at sixth singles and Matty Najfeld clinched the match for the Rams with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Elliot Fanshel at first singles.

In the unfinished matches, Mischa Koran took the first set at fourth singles from Javier Ortiz, 6-3, and was leading in the second, 5-0, when play was halted while Michael Puntillo took the first set of sixth singles from Celso de Vera Rehber, 7-5.

"This was a huge win for us," said head coach Mickey Brzov. "Tomorrow's match will be very difficult as VCU is ranked 57th in the NCAA but we are going to go all out as we have nothing to lose."

The Rams advance to the quarterfinals of the championship on Friday where they will face second-seeded VCU, the defending conference champions, at 1:00 PM at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
