Photo Gallery Five Siena pitchers combined to allow just five hits, while John Rooney and Tyler Martis each had a pair of hits, as the Saints shut out the Fordham Rams, 4-0, at Houlihan Park on Wednesday.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 13-21 on the year, while Siena improved to 10-24.
Siena opened the scoring in the first inning, as Mike Allen doubled down the left field line, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Esquerra.
Fordham tried to respond right away by loading the bases with one out.
Joseph Runco and
Rob McCunney were both hit by a pitch, while
Charles Galiano singled through the left side to load the bases. However, the bases would remain loaded, as
Tim O'Connor grounded into a fielder's choice, while
Jason Lundy flew out to right to end the inning.
After an RBI-single by Dave Hoffman in the second made it, 2-0, the Rams again tried to crack the scoreboard, as
Luke Stampfl and
Mark Donadio each drew a walk to put runners at first and second with two outs. Runco though would ground out to shortstop to end the potential rally.
The score remained at 2-0 until the ninth, where Siena added two insurance runs on a wild pitch and an RBI-ground out from Brian Fay to win the game, 4-0.
Siena held Fordham to just five hits in the contest, as five pitchers combined for the shutout. Rick Morales (2-1) earned the win, as he threw the first three innings, allowing two hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen.
Eight different pitchers threw for Fordham with no Ram pitching longer than 1.2 innings.
Kirk Haynes, Jr. (1-3), who started the game, took the loss allowing one run on one hit with a strikeout.
At the plate,
Ryan Carroll and
David Judisky were each 1-for-2 in the game, while O'Connor and Lundy each had a hit and a stolen base.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Friday, April 18
th, when the Rams travel to St. Bonaventure to open a three-game series, beginning at noon.
