Photo Gallery Bronx, N.Y. (April 11, 2014) – The Fordham University men's tennis team has only one home match this spring and they made the most of it today, defeating Sacred Heart University, 4-3, on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts to snap a four-game losing streak.
The Rams opened the match winning the doubles points, taking two of the three doubles matches.
Matty Najfeld and
Kuba Kowalski got things started with an 8-6 win at first doubles over Kevin Budranowich and Matt Dean and then
Alastair Barnes and
Mischa Koran worked overtime to defeat Justin Pagan and Brian Power at second doubles, 9-7. At third doubles, Anthony Savio and Ryan Wennberg took the match from Fordham's
J.J. Tauil and
Max Peara, 9-8, winning the tiebreaker, 7-5.
The Rams won the match by taking three of the six singles matches. Tauil dropped the first completed singles match in straight sets to Kevin Budrawich, 6-3, 6-3, at third singles but the Barnes bested Power at second singles, 6-0, 6-0 and then Najfeld upended Pagan at the top spot, 6-4, 6-3, to give the Rams a 3-1 lead.
After
Pedro Alonzo fell to Savio, 6-3, 6-0, at fifth singles to make it 3-2, Koran clinched the win for the Rams with a 6-1, 6-1 win over John Bogdanovic at sixth singles.
The final match to conclude went to a super tiebreaker as
Michael Puntillo took the first set of fourth singles from Matt Dean but dropped the second, 6-1, and the super tiebreaker, 10-5.
The Rams return to action on Saturday, April 12, as they travel to Stony Brook, N.Y. to face the University at Stony Brook at 12:00 PM.
