A grand slam home run by Brian MacDonald highlighted a six-run third inning for the Hofstra Pride, as the Pride defeated the Fordham Rams, 11-4, at Hofstra Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 7-9 overall, while Hofstra improved to 7-8.

Fordham started out great, scoring once in the first and twice in the second to take a 3-0 lead. In the first,
Matthew Cianci led off the game with a single down the left field line and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a ground out moved Cianci to third,
Tim Swatek laced a single to right, scoring Cianci.

Then in the second,
Rob McCunney reached on an error to open the inning and followed with two stolen bases.Â
Ryan McNally then ripped a double down the left field line, scoring McCunney from third.Â
Brendan Maghini continued the rally with a single to left, scoring McNally from second for a 3-0 edge.

Fordham starter
Kirk Haynes, Jr. ran into trouble in third after registering four strikeouts in the first two innings. Hofstra loaded the bases on three straight singles and scored two runs on a hit by pitch and a walk. Brian MacDonald, who was the starting pitcher for the Pride, then got himself off the hook, belting a grand slam home run to left, his second of the season, for a 6-3 lead.

The score remained at 6-3 through five innings before the Pride registered a run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and two in the eighth for an 11-3 lead.

Fordham capped the scoring with a single run in the ninth on an RBI-double by
Ryan Carroll, scoring
Ryan Mahoney, who reached on a fielder's choice.

Haynes (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs on four hits in three innings of work with five strikeouts.Â
Luke Stampfl pitched two innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts, with
Makay Redd (2 IP, 1 ER, 2 K) and
J.C. Porter (1 IP, 2 R, 2 K) rounding out the game.

At the plate, Cianci was 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Swatek and Maghini were both 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Friday, March 21
st, as the Rams open a three-game Atlantic 10 series at George Mason, beginning at 3:00 PM.
