Orlando, Fla. (March 17, 2014) – The Fordham University women's tennis team got its spring trip to Florida off on the right foot, defeating Hope College, 6-1, in the first match of the trip on Monday.
The match opened with Fordham winning the doubles point, taking both completed double matches.
Sarah Ali and
Elliesa Ball defeated Carli Capestany and Nancy Benda at first doubles, 8-3, while
Julie Leong and
Angelika Dabu were victorious by the same score over Hope's Marie Holaway and Mallory Smith at the second position. Fordham's
Bella Genkina and
Anika Novacek were ahead of Paige Courts and Stephanie Huffman, 6-4, when the match was halted.
The Rams won the match by taking five of the six singles matches, all in straight sets. Ball upended Claire Cooper at first singles, 6-3, 6-4, while Ali bested Benda at second, 6-2, 6-1. At fourth singles,
Julie Leong defeated Anna Garcia, 6-2, 6-4;
Destiny Grunin won at fifth singles over Kate Mader, 6-0, 6-4, and
Hanna Fritzinger won at the sixth position over Emily Hall, 6-2, 6-0
The Rams return to action on Thursday, March 20, as they face Florida Atlantic University in Orlando.
