Box Score Queens, N.Y. (March 11, 2014) – The Fordham University men's tennis team squared off with another Atlantic 10 school, Saint Louis University, today at the U.S. National Tennis Center, falling to the Billikens, 4-3.
The match opened with Saint Louis wining the doubles point, taking all three doubles matches.
The Rams got on the board as
Pedro Alonzo took second singles from Joe Flanagan in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, but
Alastair Barnes fell at the third position, 6-2, 6-0, to Yehia El Sallaly as the Billikens took a 2-1 lead.
Michael Puntillo was victorious when his opponent, Vuk Poledica, retired in the second set of fifth singles to even the match at two and
Matty Najfeld upended Patrick Kella, 7-6, 6-4, at first singles to put the Rams up 3-2.
At the fourth position,
J.J. Tauil dropped the first set to Nishaad Balachandran, 6-1, but came back to win the second, 6-2, to force a deciding third set which was taken by Balachandran, 6-1.
The match came down to sixth singles where
Max Peara took the first set from Luis Miguel Flores, 6-3, but dropped the second, 6-1, and the third, 6-0.
The Rams return to action on Friday, March 14, as they face St. John's University at the U.S. National Tennis Center at 8:30 a.m.
