Women’s Swimming Places Second at Atlantic 10 Championships

Megan Polaha Named Most Outstanding Rookie Performer

Geneva, Ohio (February 22, 2014) – Megan Polaha saved her best for last, winning the 200 butterfly in an Atlantic 10 record time to lead Fordham to a second place finish at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championship at the SPIRE Institute. Fordham's takes the second-place trophy for the third time over the past four years at the conference championship.

Polaha won the 200 butterfly in a school and pool record time of 1:58.51, surpassing the previous Atlantic 10 and Fordham school mark of 1:59.42 set by Courtney Collyer in 2012 and the previous SPIRE Institute record of 1:59.63 set by Sarah Koucheki of the SPIRE LESD in 2012. Polaha, who set her second school record at the championships, was over a second faster than the runner-up, Megan Smith from Duquesne.

For her exploits, Polaha was named the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women's Swimming Most Outstanding Rookie Performer. She is the second Ram to earn that honor, joining Collyer who won the award in 2009.
 
Richmond won the team championship for the fourth straight year with 645.5 points, followed by Fordham with 493 points, 26 points ahead of third-place Massachusetts (467). George Mason was fourth with 436 points followed by Duquesne (371.5), La Salle (318), Rhode Island (287), George Washington (253.5), St. Bonaventure (213) and Saint Louis (152.5).
 
Frances Warren also competed in the finals of the 200 fly, finishing seventh in a time of 2:04.02, and Kalena Laurent was second in the 200 fly B final in a time of 2:01.99.
 
In the 200 back, Morgan Fairclough, Spencer Chappell and Theresa Goehring finished three-four-five with Fairclough touching the pad in a season-best time of 2:00.65 while Chappell was 0.36 seconds behind her in 2:01.01 and Goehring 0.23 seconds behind Chappell in 2:01.24.
 
Victoria McGovern won the 200 breaststroke B final in a season-best time of 2:18.50 while Anna Marshall was fourth in 2:20.80 and Kelly Carroll was sixth in 2:21.41. Jordan Tomimatsu placed sixth in the 200 back B final in 2:03.68.
 
In the final event of the championships, the Fordham 400 free relay of Shannon Lulley, Laurent, Polaha and Chandler Lulley took sixth in a season-best time of 3:27.11.

In all, the Fordham women set three school records, one Atlantic 10 record, had two A-10 champions, and one NCAA B cut at the championships.
