Fordham Women Third, Men Sixth, After Day 2 of Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships

Women place three swimmers in 200 IM finals

Geneva, Ohio (February 20, 2014) – Day two of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving championships have concluded at the SPIRE Institute with the Fordham women sitting in third place and the men in sixth.
 
Richmond, the three-time defending champions, leads the women's competition with 236.5 points followed by Massachusetts (159), Fordham (156), George Mason (150), La Salle (145), Duquesne (138.5), Rhode Island (129), St. Bonaventure (112), George Washington (103.5) and Saint Louis (66.5).
 
On the men's side, Massachusetts is in the lead after two days with 243 points followed by St. Bonaventure (242), George Mason (178), La Salle University (172), George Washington (142), Fordham (133) and Saint Louis (128).
 
The Fordham women were led tonight by three swimmers placing in the 200 IM finals as Megan Polaha took sixth in a season-best time of 2:03.81, while Kelly Carroll was seventh in 2:03.81 and Shannon Lulley finished eighth in 2:04.02.
 
In the first event of the night, Megan Zarriello placed sixth in the 500 free finals in a season-best time of 4:56.17.
 
In the 500 free B final, Kara Field placed second in 4:56.16, just getting out touched by the consolation winner, Molly Smyth of UMass, by 0.01 seconds.
 
Chandler Lulley placed fifth in in 50 free finals in a season-best time of 23.62 while in the B final Megan Gray was seventh in 24.06.
 
In the 200 free relay, the team of Shannon Lulley, Gray, Polaha and Chandler Lulley placed sixth in 1:34.93, chopping almost four seconds off the previous season-best time, just 0.23 seconds behind fifth-place Duquesne, 0.29 seconds behind fourth-place Rhode Island and 0.39 seconds behind third-place La Salle
 
On the men's side, Steve Sholdra got things started for the Rams with a seventh place showing the 500 free finals in 4:32.89.
 
In the 50 free finals, Shintaro Noguchi finished fifth in a season-best time of 20.61 while Thomas Shetler won the B finals in 20.70 with teammate Joe Mercurio right behind him in second place in 20.78.
 
Noguchi, Shetler, Patrick Militti and Mercurio teamed up to race in the 200 free relay, taking fourth in a season-best time of 1:21.82.
 
The 2014 Atlantic 10 swimming and diving championships will continue with preliminary races on Friday morning beginning at 10:30 AM.
