Women’s 200 MR Earns Second Team All-Conference Honors on Day One of A-10 Championships

Geneva, Ohio (February 19, 2014) - Day one of competition of the 2014 Atlantic 10 swimming and diving championships is in the books with the Fordham women sitting in a third place tie and the men in fourth at the SPIRE Institute.
 
Three-time defending champions, the University of Richmond, currently lead the women's competition with 80 points followed by George Mason (60), Fordham and Rhode Island (58), Duquesne (56), George Washington and St. Bonaventure (50), La Salle (44), Massachusetts (34) and Saint Louis (32).
 
On the men's side, Massachusetts leads the way with 133 points, followed by St. Bonaventure (100), La Salle (90), Fordham (61), Saint Louis (60), George Washington (58) and George Mason (57).
 
The women got things started with the 200 medley relay of Morgan Fairclough, Kelly Carroll, Shannon Lulley and Chandler Lulley who earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors by placing second in a season-best time of 1:42.37, behind event winner Richmond but 0.28 seconds ahead of third-place Rhode Island.
 
The men's 200 medley relay of Shintaro Noguchi, Ben Dwyer, Thomas Shetler and Joseph Mecurio placed fifth in a school record time of 1:31.14, but was moved up to fourth by a disqualification by George Mason. The previous school record was 1:31.29 set in 2011 by Billy Colton, Matthew Grabiak, Noguchi and Devon Morris. The Rams just beat George Washington to the touch pad, finishing 0.18 seconds ahead of the Colonials.
 
In the women's 800 freestyle relay, the team of Kalena Laurent, Megan Zarriello, Megan Gray and Kara Field placed seventh in a season-best time of 7:26.55.
 
The men's 800 freestyle relay of Noguchi, Steve Sholdra, Nick Belfanti and Pat Militti finished seventh in a season-best time of time of 6:45.06.
 
The Rams had three men competing on the one meter board with Kevin Jimenez-Cowell placing 13th with 177.65 points, followed by Hanuel Moon, who placed 14th with 153.25 points. Val Kharkover finished 18th with 134.85 points.
 
The 2014 Atlantic 10 swimming and diving championships will continue with preliminary races on Thursday morning beginning at 10:30 AM.
