From the class of 2014 graduates to current major leaguer Nick Martinez to a number of All-Conference performers to Ron Ryba, the team captain for the 1954 team, it was a fantastic get together with plenty of laughter and fond memories for the annual Fordham baseball alumni game against the current Rams on Saturday at Houlihan Park.
Â
The alumni showed up in full force, representing six decades of Fordham baseball, with Joe Pellechi ('68) and John ('72) and Dom Vanacore ('70) leading off the game with the first three at bats in the first inning.
Â
Recent Fordham Athletics Hall of Famer Tom Davis threw the first two innings, holding the current Rams to two runs in the first, while keeping the team off the scoreboard in the second.
Â
The current Rams then flexed a little bit of muscle in the third inning, as
Charles Galiano hit a three-run home run to left off alumni pitcher J.P. Mack to make it a 5-0 score.
Â
After a run in the fourth made it, 6-0, the alumni put a couple of zeroes on the board with
Rich Anastasi and
Tim Swatek each throwing an inning of scoreless relief.
Â
The alumni then broke up the shutout in the seventh, as
Ryan Phelan beat out an infield single and moved to second on a single to left by Swatek. After a double play ball moved Phelan to third, he would score on a wild pitch.
Â
For the alumni, Bobby DiNardo had a pair of hits and a stolen base, while Joe Russo and Ryan Maghini also had hits in the game.
Â
The current Rams were paced by Galiano, who was 2-for-2 with a double and the three-run home run, while
Mark Donadio and
Joseph DeVito each had a pair of hits.
