The Fordham men's tennis squad opened its fall season on Saturday at Saint Peter's with a very competitive match. In the end, it was Saint Peter's Jorge Del Rey Rojas holding off Fordham's
Peder Gram at sixth singles to give the Peacocks a 4-3 win.
The match began with doubles action with Fordham earning the doubles point.
Kuba Kowalski and
Matty Najfeld combined at first doubles for an 8-6 win over Charlie Carrera and Marko Knezevic, while
J.J. Tauil and
Max Peara outlasted Tom Jottrand and Jorge Del Rey Rojas, 9-8 with a 7-2 tie-breaker win.
In singles play, Najfeld added a singles win to his doubles victory, topping Knezevic, 6-3, 6-2,at second singles, while
Jan Krouham defeated Mario Huljev at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-0.
After three singles wins by Saint Peter's, the winning decision came down to the sixth singles match between Gram and Del Rey Rojas. Del Rey Rojas would avenge his doubles loss, topping the Ram, 6-4, 7-5.
The Fordham men's tennis team will next be in action, September 20-22, at the USTA College Invitational, held at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
