Wide Receivers/Tight Ends Brian Wetzel leads receiving corps in 2013

There are two things that the 2013 Fordham University receiving squad has. Depth and experience. With five players who finished with double digit receptions in 2012 returning and the roster being bolstered by two transfers and five freshmen, the Rams are well stocked at wide out.

The 2013 Fordham receiving corps is led by a couple of preseason All-Patriot League picks, junior wide out Brian Wetzel and junior tight end Dan Light.

Brian Wetzel
Wetzel, a junior who was named to the 2013 CFPA Wide Receiver and All-Purpose Watch Lists, earned First Team All-Patriot League accolades at wide receiver and Second Team honors as a return specialist last fall, leading the 2012 Rams with 72 catches for 1,042 yards and seven touchdowns. He ranked fourth on the Fordham single season reception list and fifth on the receiving yards list and became just the third Ram to accumulate more than 1,000 receiving yards in a season (Javarus Dudley did it three times and Jason Caldwell once). Wetzel led the Patriot League and was 18th in the NCAA FCS in receiving yards/game (94.7) and ranked third in the league and 22nd in the NCAA FCS in receptions/game (6.5).

On the year, Wetzel had seven 100-yard receiving games, including a career-best 187 yards on 14 catches in the season finale with Colgate. The 14 receptions tied the Fordham single game record while the 187 receiving yards was the seventh most in a game in school history. Wetzel now has eight 100-yard receiving games in his career, tied for fourth best at Fordham.

Light, a junior who earlier this summer was placed on the CFPA Tight End Watch List, was named First Team All-Patriot League last fall, catching 45 passes for 388 yards on the season, ranking third on the team in receptions and fourth in receiving yards. He set career-highs last year in receptions and receiving yards with nine catches for 66 yards at Holy Cross.

Junior Sam Ajala is also back at receiver after appearing in all eleven games as a sophomore, making eleven catches for 168 yards (15.3 yards/reception) with one touchdown, a 35-yard grab in the win over Cornell. He also returned four kickoffs for 65 yards (16.2 yards/return).

Also returning from last year's roster are senior Andrew Spanarkel, junior Marco Fragnito and sophomores Ben Johnson and Tony Patrignelli while senior Griffin Murphy moves to wide receiver in 2013.

At tight end, sophomore Phazhan Odom is back after missing the 2012 season with an injury while junior Adam Malkiewicz moves over to tight end from wide receiver.

The receiving unit will also be aided this fall by the addition of junior transfers Marcus Jones and Tebucky Jones (no relation). Marcus Jones arrives at Fordham after a solid two seasons at ASA College in Brooklyn. Prior to ASA, he was a three-time All-Conference pick at Pennsauken High School in Pennsauken, New Jersey.

Tebucky Jones, a transfer from UConn, played in eight games for the Huskies as a sophomore last fall. A First Team All-State honoree at New Britain High School in New Britain, Connecticut, he was also named to the Hartford Courant All-State team and was a First Team All-New Britain Herald pick.

Freshman who will battle for time at wide out include Luke Arlotto, Kyvaune Brammer, Robbie Cantelli, Blake Potter and Jorge Solano.

Arlotto, a graduate of East Chapel Hill High School in Chapel Hill, N.C., was the recipient of the football leadership award a senior while Brammer, a product of Brooklyn Tech High School, was a First Team All-City selection and two-time First Team All-Brooklyn honoree while also being named to the Brooklyn 44 squad.

Cantelli, a graduate of Holmdel High School in Holmdel, N.J., was a Third Team All-County pick and appeared in the Army All-Shore All-Star game (Monmouth vs. Ocean County). A First Team All-Division and Second Team All-Shore selection, Cantelli was the team offensive and defensive MVP.

Potter was a Second Team Asbury Park Press All-Shore Conference and Second Team All-Shore Media All-Shore Conference pick at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School before he attended Northfield Mount Herman Prep School in 2012-13.

Solano, a graduate of Coral Springs Charter High School in Coral Springs, Florida, was named All-Broward County in 2011 and was a 2013 Sun Sentinel Top 50 Prospect. He scored over 30 career touchdowns at Coral Spring Charter.
