Women's Tennis Comes Up Short vs. Xavier

Final Stats

April 19, 2013 - Charlottesville, Va. - Two weeks ago, the Fordham University women's tennis squad hosted Xavier University, falling to the Musketeers, 4-3. Today the two teams met again at the Atlantic 10 Championships at the Boar's Head Sports Club where the contest came down to the final singles match where Xavier's Alex Brinker defeated Fordham's Sarah Ali in a three-set match to lead the Musketeers to another 4-3 win over the Rams.

With the match tied at 3-3, Brinker and Ali went to a third set after Brinker took the first, 7-6 (4) and Ali the second, 6-4. Brinker was able to edge out Ali in the third set, 7-5, to give the second-seeded Musketeers the win over the seventh-seeded Rams.

Unlike the first meeting, Fordham opened the match by dropping the doubles point to Xavier, losing two of the three doubles matches. Julie Leong and Angelika Dabu teamed up to get doubles off on the right foot for the Rams, defeating Megan Morris and Brinker at third doubles, 8-4. But Allyson Westling and Daniella Patton upended Anika Novacek and Bella Genkina at the second position, 8-2, and Kelly Alkire and Katie Pleiman clinched the doubles point for Xavier with an 8-4 win over Amy Simidian and Ali.

Novacek evened the match for the Rams with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Lizzie Oosterbaan at sixth singles before Patton defeated Genkina in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, at the fourth position to make it 2-1 for the Musketeers.

Pleiman put Xavier up 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Simidian at first singles before Dabu bested Alkire, 6-2, 7-5, at the third spot and Leong knotted the match at three with a three set win over Wolf at fifth singles. Wolf took the first set, 6-4, but Leong rebounded to take the second, 6-2, and the third, 6-3, for the win.
