Final Stats
April 13, 2013 - Washington, D.C. - It all came down to the final match, a match which went to a tiebreaker, but Fordham's Angelika Dabu couldn't overcome George Washington's Stephanie Wei as the Rams fall to the Colonials, 4-3, in a matchup of Atlantic 10 teams at the GW Tennis Center.
With the team score tied 3-3, Dabu and Wei went to a third set after Dabu took the first set, 6-4 and Wei the second, 6-4. In the third set, the two played a closely contested match which ended up going to a tiebreaker, won by Wei, 7-3, as she took the third set, 7-6.
The Rams opened the match dropping the doubles point, losing two of the three doubles matches. Sarah Ali and Amy Simidian took first doubles for Fordham, defeating Mimi Hamling and Leah Pascarella, 8-3, but George Washington's Christina Carpenter and Dorota Lysienia bested Fordham's Bella Genkina and Anika Novacek at second doubles, 8-4, and Egle Jakuciunaite and Wei broke the 1-1 tie in doubles by defeating Dabu and Julie Leong, 9-8 (4).
In singles play, Simidian, Leong and Novacek picked up wins for the Rams at the first, fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Simidian dropped the first set to Pascarella, 6-6, before coming back to win the second and third sets by identical 6-4 scores.
Leong and Novacek won in straight sets with upending Jakuciunaite, 6-2, 6-2, and Novacek defeating Carpenter, 6-1, 6-1.
The Rams close out the regular season on Sunday as they host LIU for Senior Day on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts at 1:00 PM.
