Bronx, N.Y. - (Feb. 6, 2013) - The Fordham swimming & diving team had their final tune-up for this year's Atlantic 10 Championship on Wednesday, sending off its senior class with a sweep of St. Francis (NY) College at the Messmore Aquatic Center. The Fordham men defeated the Terriers, 136-86, while the women also won, 142-55.
The two wins leave Fordham with a 5-8 record on the men's side and 10-4 on the women's.
The Rams posted the top time in all but one event on the evening, and had five competitors win multiple events. Sophomore Zachary Jacobsen led the way by winning the 1000 freestyle in 10:04.11 and the 100 backstroke in 55.14 seconds. Jacobsen was also a part of the winning 200 freestyle relay, which included Will Thomann, Nick Belfanti, and Shintaro Noguchi. The group clocked in with a time of 1:29.18.
Freshman Steve Sholdra also won two events, taking home the 100 butterfly in 53.06 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.47, while senior Kevin Wong won both diving competitions in his final meet, scoring 246.60 on the one-meter board and 263.03 on the three-meter board.
Other individual event winners on the men's side also included Michael Grimmett-Norris in the 200 freestyle (1:48.35), Devon Morris in the 50 freestyle (21.72), Noguchi in the 200 individual medley (1:56.91), and Kevin Kosciuk in the 500 freestyle (4:55.93). The last event win for the men was in the 200 medley relay, as Morris, Thomas Yi, Pat Militti, and Thomas Shetler won that race in 1:37.67.
On the women's side, freshman Megan Foster and sophomore Claire Parker each won two events. Foster captured the 200 individual medley in 2:10.52 and the 100 freestyle in 54.70 seconds, while Parker had the top score in both diving competitions, scoring 188.63 on the one-meter board and 181.50 on the three-meter board.
The Fordham women would have six other swimmers win an event on Wednesday. Megan Zarriello won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.66, with Megan Gray taking the 50 freestyle in 25.02 seconds and Chandler Lulley taking the 100 backstroke in 1:00.03. Miranda Morton also took home the 500 freestyle (5:17.81) while Megan Gehrich won the 100 breaststroke (1:09.21). The final individual winner was senior Brienne Ryan, who capped her home career by winning the 100 butterfly in 57.49 seconds.
In relay action, the 200 medley relay of Maureen McKenna, Gehrich, Jordan Tomimatsu, and Gray led off the meet with a winning time of 1:53.49, while the Rams' senior relay of Alana Biagioli, Kellie Lyver, Ryan, and Rachel Deputato capped the night with a win in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.37.
The Fordham swimming & diving teams will now make the trip to Geneva, Ohio, for the 2013 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship, which will be held February 20-23 at the Spire Institute.
