Feb. 3, 2013 - Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham squash team had a very busy weekend, playing four matches at the Bucknell Round Robin and then finishing the weekend with a home match against Vassar. In all, Fordham finished 3-2 on the weekend, improving the team's record to 6-9.
On Friday, the Rams began the Bucknell Round Robin tournament with a 7-2 victory over Lafayette.
Traveling only eight players, the Rams won seven of the remaining eight matches against the Leopards, led by Kincade Webster at the #1 slot, defeating Andrew Winn, 11-9, 11-7, and 11-8. Marcus Stromsmo, Paul Monaghan, and Ross Garlick would also post straight set victories for Fordham.
Jack O'Brien and Quetzalli Torres each won their match in four sets, while Carlos Ortiz closed out the Fordham win, defeating Lafayette's C.J. Horning in five sets, 1-7, 7-11, 5-11, 11-6, and 11-9.
On Saturday, the Rams went 1-2 in three matches, falling to Bucknell, 9-0, and Northeastern, 8-1. Fordham then rebounded in the last match to top Ithaca, 7-2.
Fordham's lone win in the Northeastern loss came from Monaghan as he toppled Phil Huntley, 6-11, 11-6, 11-9, and 11-2.
Against Ithaca, O'Brien, Garlick and Torres each won their match in straight sets, while Webster, Stromsmo, and Monaghan won in four sets. Ortiz was once again pushed to the limit, but came out on top against Ithaca's Fargo Balliet in five sets, 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, and 11-4.
On Sunday, the Rams capped the weekend with an 8-1 win over Vassar, completing a season sweep of Vassar.
O'Brien earned his third win of the weekend defeating Rob Ruggiero at the #2 slot in straight sets, 11-8, 11-3, and 11-6, as did Stromsmo over David Garfinkel, 11-4, 11-3, and 11-7. Ethan Brooks, Jeremy Keller, and Torres also won their matches in straight sets, while Garlick won his match in four and Ortiz once again in five.
The Fordham squash team will next be in action on February 9th, as the Rams take on Connecticut College and Bryant University in New London, Connecticut.
