Day 4 Results
Geneva, Ohio - (Feb. 23, 2013) - The Fordham women's swimming & diving team finished in third place after the final day of competition at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The exciting night of finals capped the career of a number of seniors, which included Brienne Ryan, who closed with a flurry, winning gold in the 200-yard backstroke in Atlantic 10 and school record time.
Overall, Richmond won the Atlantic 10 title with 737 points, followed by Massachusetts (594), Fordham (473), La Salle (442), George Washington (285), Rhode Island (269.5), Duquesne (243.5), St. Bonaventure (215), Saint Louis (185), Xavier (165), and Butler (68).
The final night of the championship began with the 1650-yard freestyle event. The Rams scored three swimmers in the grueling event, led by Kara Field in sixth place in 16:58.42. Megan Zarriello placed 13th overall in 17:14.72, while Frances Warren scored 16th in 17:21.69.
Next up was the women's 200-yard backstroke, where Brienne Ryan took center stage by winning gold for the second time in the championship, obliterating the competition in an Atlantic 10 and school record time of 1:55.79, breaking her own mark of 1:56.11 set in 2011. The time was also an NCAA "B" qualifying mark. Ryan now joins former teammates Courtney Collyer (2009 & 2012) and Caitlin Napoli (2009), and Erika Newell (2005) as the only Fordham women's swimmers to win two events in one Atlantic 10 Championship.
Besides Ryan, three other Rams made the finals, as Spencer Chappell placed sixth in the "A" final in 2:01.88, Jordan Tomimatsu was second in the "B" final (10th overall) in 2:02.91, and Theresa Goehring finished third in the "B" final (11th overall) in 2:03.32.
In the 100-yard freestyle, a trio of Rams qualified for the consolation final, led by Alana Biagioli, who won the "B" final in 51.55 seconds (9th overall). Chandler Lulley and Kellie Lyver also scored, as they tied for 15th overall in a time of 52.36 seconds.
The individual events wrapped up with the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard butterfly. Fordham had three swimmers make the "B" final in the breaststroke. Kelly Carroll took third (11th overall) in 2:21.73, which was quickly followed by Anna Marshall in 2:21.76 (4th - 12th overall) and Victoria McGovern in 2:24.40 (8th - 16th overall). Only Warren made the finals of the 200 butterfly, placing fourth overall in the "A" final in 2:02.19.
The final event of the championship was the 400 freestyle relay, where Fordham's team of Ryan, Chandler Lulley, Lyver, and Biagioli clocked in at 3:24.69, good for third.
