Men's Swimming & Diving Moves Into Sixth at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship

Day Three Results

Geneva, Ohio - (Feb. 22, 2013) - The Fordham men's swimming & diving team moved into a tie for sixth place after day three of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship, held at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. It was a record setting day for the Rams, as three school records were broken, while junior Shintaro Noguchi defended his 100-yard butterfly title, breaking the Atlantic 10 record in the process.

Overall, St. Bonaventure remained at the top of the standings with 470 points, followed by Massachusetts (389.5), Xavier (363), George Washington (270), Saint Louis (263.5), Fordham (239.5), and La Salle (239.5).

The night began with the 400-yard individual medley, as four Rams made the finals. Steve Sholdra had the top finish, taking fifth in the "A" final in 3:59.92, while Kevin Kosiuck was eighth in 4:03.76. In the "B" final, Zachary Jacobsen was second (10th overall) in the "B" final in 4:01.49 with Michael Grimmett-Norris being sixth (14th overall) in a time of 4:06.78.

Next up was the 100-yard butterfly, which had three Rams in the finals. Devon Morris and Patrick Militti started with a fourth (12th overall) and fifth (13th overall) finish in the "B" final in 50.52 and 50.53 seconds, respectively. Then in the "A" final, Shintaro Noguchi defended his A-10 title in the event, breaking the Atlantic 10 and school record, clocking in at 48.40 seconds. Noguchi had held the school record at 48.86 set last year, while the Atlantic 10 record was 48.41 seconds, set by Massachusetts' Chris Arsenault in 2001. Noguchi became the sixth Atlantic 10 swimmer to defend his title in the 100 butterfly event.

Fordham then scored in the 100-yard breaststroke event, courtesy of Ben Dwyer. Dwyer qualified for the "A" final with a school record time of 55.56 seconds, breaking his own mark of 56.98 seconds, set last season. He followed with a time of 56.88 seconds in the "A" final to place eighth.

The last individual event was the 100-yard backstroke, which saw Thomas Yi finish third in the "B" final (11th overall) in a time of 50.79 seconds.

The final men's event of the night was the 400-yard medley relay, which saw the third school record of the day fall. Fordham's team of Yi, Dwyer, Noguchi, and Morris placed fifth overall in a school record time of 3:19.92, breaking the previous school mark of 3:21.68, set in 2011.

The final day of the championship will begin at 10:30 AM on Saturday with preliminary heats, followed by the finals at 6:30 PM.
