2013 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship Gets Underway at the Spire Institute

Day One Results

Geneva, Ohio - (Feb. 20, 2013) - The 2013 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship got underway on Wednesday from the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The Fordham women medaled twice on day one, while two school records fell on the men's side.

Through three events in the women's competition, Massachusetts leads with 155 points, followed by Richmond (101), La Salle (86), Fordham (66), St. Bonaventure (56), Xavier (54), George Washington (50), Duquesne (36), Rhode Island (33), Butler (28), and Saint Louis (26).

The night began with the women's 200 medley relay, where the Fordham team of Brienne Ryan, Kelly Carroll, Shannon Lulley, and Alana Biagioli took silver in a season-best time of 1:41.39.

The Rams did not have a competitor in the women's one-meter dive, but did take bronze in the 800 freestyle relay. The Rams' group of Ryan, Kara Field, Megan Zarriello, and Biagioli clocked in with a season-best time of 7:24.76.

Through two events in the men's competition, St. Bonaventure holds the day one lead, winning both relay events for a total of 80 points. Xavier is second with 68, followed by Massachusetts (60), George Washington (58), Saint Louis (56), La Salle (54), and Fordham (52).

The Rams began the competition by taking seventh in the 200 medley relay, as Thomas Yi, Ben Dwyer, Patrick Militti, and Devon Morris posted a season-best time of 1:31.84.

Fordham then produced two school records in the final event of the night. The Rams placed fifth in the 800 freestyle relay, as Shintaro Noguchi, Steve Sholdra, Yi, and Militti finished in a school record time of 6:41.92, breaking the old mark of 6:48.83, set last year by almost seven seconds. In addition, Noguchi's opening 200-yard leg clocked in at 1:39.37, breaking Chuck Felice's 1977 record of 1:39.89, which was the oldest standing record at Fordham for swimming.

Day two of the championship will begin at 10:30 AM on Thursday with preliminary heats, followed by the finals at 6:30 PM.
