Swimming & Diving Concludes Stay at Bucknell Invitational

Noguchi and Polaha Capture Event Wins on Final Day

The Fordham swimming & diving teams wrapped up their stay at the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday, as the Fordham women placed second out of ten teams, while the men finished seventh out of nine squads.
 
The Bucknell women won the overall title with 1,870 points, followed by Fordham with 1,092.5 points, while on the men's side, Yale finished first with 1,591.5 points with Fordham recording 601.5 points.
 
On the last day of finals, the events began with the 1650-yard freestyle.  On the women's side, Miranda Morton was the Rams' top finisher in 14th place in 17:51.14, while Andrew Hendrickson was the top men's finisher in 23rd place in 16:52.73.
 
Next up was the 200-yard backstroke where the Rams had six finalists, including four women.  Theresa Goehring and Spencer Chappell were both in the "A" final with Goehring taking second place in 2:02.75, while Chappell was seventh in 2:07.83.  The Rams then had a 1-2 finish in the "C" final with Morgan Fairclough winning the race in 2:04.59 (17th overall) and Jordan Tomimatsu right behind her in 2:07.70.  On the men's side, Michael Grimmett-Norris was 13th overall as a part of the "B" final in 1:54.78, while Miguel Mattox was 18th overall in the "C" final (1:54.83).
 
In the 100 freestyle, Chandler Lulley won the "B" final in 52.10 seconds, while Shintaro Noguchi won the men's "A" final in 46.24 seconds.  Thomas Shetler also made the finals, taking 15th overall as a part of the "B" final (47.52).
 
Next was the 200 breaststroke, where five Fordham women and four men made the finals.  The women were led by Kelly Carroll, who was fourth in the "A" final in 2:23.64, while Anna Marshall won the "B" final for ninth overall in 2:22.51.  Victoria McGovern (11th – 2:27.17), Megan Gehrich (15th – 2:30.94), and Savannah Coe (23rd - 2:31.89) also made the finals.  On the men's side, Steve Sholdra and Ben Dwyer took 11th (2:09.24) and 13th (2:10.08), respectively, as a part of the "B" final, while Zach Jacobsen won the "C" final in 2:10.35.  Kevin Kosciuk also made the "C" final, taking 23rd overall in 2:15.32.
 
Then, Fordham had its best event of the entire Invitational, the 200-yard butterfly.  The Rams had eight women score, which included a 1-2-3 finish in the "A" final.  Megan Polaha won the event in 2:01.88, followed by Frances Warren in second (2:03.22), and Kalena Laurent in third (2:03.72).  Shannon Jones (15th – 2:11.71), Megan Gehrich (16th – 2:12.29), Megan Gray (2:11.34), Morton (20th – 2:12.84), and Aurelia O'Keefe (21st – 2:13.03) were the other scorers.  The men had similar success with five scorers.  Sholdra led the way in third place in the "A" final in 1:52.31.  Fordham then won the "B" final with Noguchi (1:53.50) and the "C" final with Brandon Strong (1:55.78).  Other scorers included Pat Militti in 10th (1:55.35) and Kosciuk in 21st (1:57.70).
 
The final event of the Bucknell Invitational was the 400-yard freestyle relay, where the women took third in 3:32.40, and the men were sixth in 3:08.49.
 
The Fordham swimming & diving teams will next be in action on December 4th, when the Rams host Manhattan College at 7:00 PM.
