Swimming & Diving Continues Run at Bucknell Invitational

Fordham Women Move into Second Place, While Men Remain Seventh

Day two of the Bucknell Invitational is in the books in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and the Fordham swimming & diving team had another successful run, highlighted by the women's team moving up to second place, as well as one school record being set.
 
Overall, the Bucknell women lead the ten-team competition with 1,285 points, followed by Fordham in second with 748.5 points, Delaware (686), Georgetown (606), La Salle (477.5), Binghamton (359), CCSU (290), Yale (231), Susquehanna (113), and Penn State (64).
 
On the men's side, Yale has taken over first place in the nine-team invitational with 1,011.5 points, followed by Bucknell (915.5), La Salle (546), Binghamton (524), Georgetown (480.5), Delaware (471), Fordham (354.5), Susquehanna (115), and Penn State (74).
 
The finals on day two began with 200 medley relay, where the Fordham women placed ninth in 1:48.79, while the men were sixth in 1:35.61.
 
The first individual event was the 400-yard individual medley, where three women and four men made the finals.  In the women's event, Megan Polaha finished third in the "A" final in 4:29.67, while Frances Warren took sixth in 4:33.92.  The "B" final saw Megan Gehrich place 11th overall in 4:32.64 as the last women's finalist.  The men's event saw Steve Sholdra take third in the "A" final in 3:59.80, while Zach Jacobsen (19th – 4:10.92), Kevin Kosciuk (21st – 4:11.60), and Michael Grimmett-Norris (24th – 4:15.44) were all in the "C" final.
 
Next up was the 100-yard butterfly event, which saw eight Fordham swimmers in the finals.  In the women's event, Polaha was sixth in the "A" final in 57.73 seconds, while Kalena Laurent (9th – 56.30), Shannon Lulley (10th – 57.51), Shannon Jones (12th – 57.91), and Megan Gray (16th – 59.45) were all in the "B" final.  Aurelia O'Keefe was the last women's competitor to score, taking 22nd overall as a part of the "C" final (59.96).  Over on the men's side, Shintaro Noguchi placed second in the "A" final in 49.72 seconds, while Pat Militti was 19th overall as a part of the "C final in 51.42 seconds.
 
The next event was the 200-yard freestyle where six Fordham swimmers were in the finals, five of which were women.  Three of those five were in the "A" final led by Laurent in second place in 1:51.80 with Megan Zarriello in fifth place in 1:52.66 and Warren in eighth in 1:57.66.  Kara Field and Gray made the "B" final, posting 15th (1:56.25) and 16th place (1:57.84), respectively to round out the women's finalists.  The lone men's swimmer to make the finals was Militti, who finished 22nd overall as a part of the "C" final in 1:45.51.
 
The big highlight of the day came in the 100-yard breaststroke, where in the preliminaries, junior Kelly Carroll broke the school record in 1:03.57, surpassing Nicole Marshall's 2010 mark of 1:03.68.  In the finals, Carroll grabbed third in the "A" final in 1:04.10, while Anna Marshall was fourth in 1:05.57.  Shannon Lulley and Victoria McGovern also made the "C" final, taking 18th overall (1:07.73) and 20th (1:08.66), respectively.  Over in the men's event, Ben Dwyer and Robert Simkins qualified for the "C" final, earning 19th (1:00.16) and 24th (1:02.71) overall.
 
The 100-yard backstroke saw four women's swimming in the "B" final, led by Jordan Tomimatsu, who won the race in 58.93 seconds, good for ninth overall.  Chandler Lulley (10th – 58.54), Spencer Chappell (11th – 58.88), and Morgan Fairclough (13th – 59.99) were also in the "B" final.  The men's event had two Fordham swimmers in the 100-yard backstroke, where Miguel Mattox was 19th overall in 53.56 seconds in the "C" final with Michael Grimmett-Norris finishing 22nd in 53.76 seconds.
 
The final event of the day was the 800 freestyle relay, where the Rams were second in the women's event in 7:35.02, while the men were fifth in 6:55.55.
 
The Bucknell Invitational concludes competition on Sunday.
