Swimming & Diving Opens Competition at Bucknell Invitational

Women in Third After Day One, While Men Sit in Seventh

The Fordham swimming & diving teams began their final competition prior to Thanksgiving break on Friday, as the Rams are in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania this weekend for the Bucknell Invitational.  After day one, the Fordham women are in third place out of ten teams, while the men's squad is seventh out of nine teams.
 
Bucknell leads both team scoring competitions.  The Bucknell women lead with 548.5 points followed by Delaware (341) and Fordham (279.5).  On the men's side, Bucknell leads with 425.5 points with Yale right behind them (422.5).  Fordham has 188 points.
 
The night of finals began with the 200 freestyle relay, where the Rams finished sixth in the women's event in a season-best time of 1:38.38, while the men's team took third overall in a season-best mark of 1:24.28.
 
The first individual event of the night was the 500 freestyle, where five Rams made the finals.  In the women's "A" final, Kalena Laurent took third overall in 4:57.76 with Frances Warren taking eighth in 5:08.42.  The "B" final saw Megan Zarriello win the race to earn ninth overall in a season-best time of 4:56.25, while Kara Field recorded a time of 5:05.52, good for 13th.  In the men's event, Steve Sholdra grabbed second place in the "A" final with a season-best time of 4:30.10.
 
In the 200 individual medley event, Fordham once again had five finalists, led by Kelly Carroll, who won the "A" final with a season-best time of 2:03.89.  The Rams also had Megan Polaha and Theresa Goehring in the "A" final of the 200 IM, taking fourth (2:06.10) and eighth (2:10.40), respectively.  Megan Gehrich was the last women's finalist, taking part in the "C" race and finishing 23rd overall in 2:12.10.  Over in the men's event, Michael Grimmett-Norris was the lone finalist in the "C" race, finishing 23rd overall in 1:57.08.
 
The last individual event on day one was the 50 freestyle, where nine Rams scored in the event.  On the women's side, Chandler Lulley (24.51) and Megan Gray (24.58) were in the "B" final, taking 13th and 14th respectively, while Kelly Carroll (18th – 24.61), Shannon Lulley (21st – 24.86), and Maureen McKenna (22nd – 24.87) all scored in the "C" final.  The men's final had Shintaro Noguchi in the "A" race, taking second in 20.77 seconds, with Thomas Shetler (9th – 21.19) and Pat Militti (13th – 21.71) in the "B" final and Joseph Mercurio in the "C" final (23rd – 22.04).
 
The final event of the night was the 400 medley relay, where Fordham placed fifth in the women's event in 3:53.90 and ninth in the men's event in 3:27.80.
 
Competition at the Bucknell Invitational continues on Saturday morning.
