Swimming & Diving Kicks Off Season at Marist

Women Win Opener, 130.3-112.5; Men Fall 131-110

The Fordham swimming & diving teams kicked off their 2013-14 season on Thursday, as the Rams traveled to Poughkeepsie, New York, to face the Marist Red Foxes.  The women got off to a good start with a 130.5-112.5 win, while the men fell just short to the Red Foxes, 131-110.
 
On the women's side, Fordham posted eight event wins, which included two multiple individual winners.  Junior Megan Zarriello posted wins in both distance freestyle events, taking the 1000 freestyle in 10:28.48 and the 500 freestyle in 5:10.47, while freshman Megan Polaha had a strong start to her career.  She captured the 200 individual medley event in 2:07.83 as well as the 200 butterfly in 2:03.35.
 
Polaha was also a part of the Rams' winning 400 medley relay, joining Theresa Goehring, Kelly Carroll, and Chandler Lulley.  The group posted a time of 3:55.71.
 
Carroll was also a part of the individual event winners, taking home the 200 breaststroke event in 2:27.76.  Freshman Kalena Laurent and junior Spencer Chappell rounded out the Fordham winners, as Laurent won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.10, while Chappell posted a time of 2:07.99 to win the 200 backstroke.
 
In the men's competition, Fordham won six individual events and one relay.  Sophomore Steve Sholdra led the way for Fordham, winning three individual events.  He took the 1000 freestyle in 9:29.38, the 200 butterfly in 1:54.20, and the 5000 freestyle in 4:38.02.
 
Right along with Sholdra in the multi-event winner category was senior Shintaro Noguchi, who captured the 100 freestyle in 47.07 seconds and the 200 freestyle in 1:44.43.   The Rams final individual winner was senior Ben Dwyer, who took home the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.86.
 
The Rams final event win came in the 400 freestyle relay, where Thomas Shetlet, Nicholas Belfanti, Michael Grimmett-Norris, and Patrick Militti won the race in 3:14.81.
 
The Fordham swimming & diving team will get little rest before the next meet, which takes place on Friday against Fairfield, beginning at 5:00 PM.
