October is national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Fordham student athletes have been doing their part to aid in this noble cause.
Over the past week, several Fordham student athletes have undertaken charitable endeavors aimed at combatting the dreadful disease, with members of the Fordham women's basketball, cheerleading, dance, softball, volleyball, football and swimming and diving teams leading the way.
It all started on Sunday, when more than 30 Rams took part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Central Park, benefitting the American Cancer Society. In all, these student athletes raised in excess of $1,000 dollars, led by women's basketball senior captain and SAAC President
Abigail Corning, who single-handedly raised over $400 dollars for the organization.
After Sunday's walk proved how seriously Fordham student athletes take the Jesuit call to be "Men and Women for Others," the Fordham volleyball squad hosted a wildly successful Dig Pink Tournament on Wednesday night in the Rose Hill Gym. Open to all members of the Fordham community, this tournament drew more than 100 participants, each of whom made a donation and had the opportunity to purchase t-shirts and raffle tickets to raise even more money for such a worthy cause. In the end, a team of Fordham athletic administrators and staff edged out members of the football team in the championship match, marking the only time this year that those student athletes have tasted defeat
The volleyball team's charitable efforts are not over yet, with the squad's annual Dig Pink match coming up tomorrow night against VCU.
