Swimming & Diving Starts Busy Weekend With Sweep of Iona

Bronx, N.Y. - (Jan. 18, 2013) - Fresh off the team's training trip, the Fordham swimming & diving team was back in action at the Messmore Aquatic Center on Friday afternoon, taking on the Iona Gaels. The Rams didn't miss a beat, posting the top mark in 22 of 26 events, as Fordham swept the dual meet from the Gaels, 140- 93 on the women's side and 134-76 in the men's competition.

Fordham took first in each of the first 10 events. The Rams opened with Jordan Tomimatsu, Kelly Carroll, Shannon Jones, and Brienne Ryan winning the 200 medley relay in 1:50.15, while the men's team of Thomas Yi, Ben Dwyer, Pat Militti, and Shintaro Noguchi also won the medley relay in 1:36.82.

The Rams followed the relay wins by sweeping the 1000-yard freestyle with Megan Gehrich (10:48.85) and Kevin Kosciuk (10:07. 69), the 200-yard freestyle with Kara Field (1:56.33) and Militti (1:43.81), the 50-yard freestyle with Alana Biagioli (25.06) and Noguchi (21.48), and the 200-yard individual medley behind Spencer Chappell (2:12.31) and Steve Sholdra (1:57.36).

After his win in the 200 freestyle, Militti also captured first place in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 51.57 seconds. He joined diver Kevin Wong as the lone multiple event winner on the day. Wong won the one-meter dive with a score of 213.01 and the three-meter dive with a score of 224.33.

Other individual event winners on the men's side included Thomas Shetler in the 100-yard freestyle (49.19) and Joseph Parisi in the 100-yard backstroke (56.42).

For the women, Ryan won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.03 seconds, while Carroll took the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle (54.82). Chandler Lulley (100 back - 59.39) and Miranda Morton (500 free - 5:14.99) also won events for the Rams.

Fordham finished the meet with the top time in both 200 freestyle relays. The women's team of Kellie Lyver, Megan Gray, Megan Foster, and Maureen McKenna won their event in 1:41.01, while the men's squad of Noguchi, William Thomann, Nicolas Alemann, and Nicholas Belfanti clocked in at 1:29.94.

The Rams will have a quick turnaround for their next meet, as Fordham will host La Salle and Richmond for a tri-meet on Saturday, January 19th, at the Messmore Aquatic Center, beginning at 1:00 PM.
