Women's Tennis Sweeps Pair of Matches at West Point

West Point, N.Y. - The Fordham University women's tennis team ventured up to West Point, N.Y., to face St. Bonaventure University and Vassar College on Sunday, coming away with a pair of wins, defeating the Bonnies, 6-1, and the Brewers, 7-0.

The two wins improve Fordham's record to 8-2 on the year.

In the first match of the day, the Rams opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning both of the completed doubles matches. Sarah Ali and Bella Genkina won at second doubles over Fatya Amiri and Manuela Marin-Salcedo, 8-5, while Julie Leong and Taylor Holt teamed up to take third doubles from Kathryn Kvas and Riley Archer, 8-1. Amy Simidian and Angelika Dabuwere trailing Amanda Pallikunnel and Marissa Brossard at first singles, 6-3, when the match was halted.

In singles play, the Rams won five of the six matches, all in straight sets. Simidian led the way, winning at first singles over Amiri, 6-0, 6-2, while Dabu won at third singles over Brossard, 6-2, 6-4. At fourth singles, Genkina took care of Pallikunnel, 6-0, 6-3, while Leong was victorious at fifth singles over Kvas, 6-1, 6-4, and Bethany Boylewon at the sixth position over Pavlovic, 6-3, 6-1.

In the second match of the day, the Rams shutout Vassar, the 26th ranked team in the NCAA Division III.

Once again, the Rams opened the match by winning the doubles point, taking all three doubles matches. Simidian and Dabu opened doubles play with an 8-1 win over Vassar's Ava Sadeghi and Joy Backer while Ali and Genkina were victorious at second doubles over Jennifer Beckerman and Samantha Schapiro, 8-3. At the third spot, Leong and Holt upended Lindsay Kantor and Hannah Van Demark, 8-6.

In singles action, the Rams won all six matches with two of the matches going to a super tie-breaker. At first singles, Ali took the first set from Beckerman, 6-3, but dropped the second, 7-6 (4), forcing the tie-breaker which she won, 10-7.

Second singles was the other position to go to a tie-breaker as Dabu dropped the first set, 7-6 (4), but won the second, 6-2, and the tie-breaker, 10-4.

The other four singles matches were all won in straight sets as Genkina defeated Backer at third singles, 6-3, 6-2; Leong took fourth singles from Schapiro, 7-6 (6), 6-2; Boyle was victorious at fifth singles over Jennifer Ruther, 6-2, 6-3; and Holt upended Van Demark, 6-4, 6-2, at sixth singles.

The Fordham women's tennis team will next be in action on Wednesday, March 7th, as the Rams travel to Jersey City, N.J., to face Saint Peter's College at 3:00 p.m.
