Nov. 3, 2012 - Annapolis, Md. - The Fordham squash team opened its 2012-13 season this weekend, competing at the Navy Round Robin in Annapolis, Md. The Rams would post a 1-4 weekend, defeating Sewanee, while falling to Navy "B", Washington, Johns Hopkins, and Bucknell.
Fordham opened the tournament with an 8-1 loss to the Navy "B" squad. The Rams lone point came from Marcus Stromsmo at the #6 slot in his first career match. Stromsmo defeated Navy's Tyler Heinemeyer, 11-7, 11-7, 7-11, and 11-8. Alex Williams almost pulled out another victory for the Rams, but fell in five sets to Navy's Jack Oster, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9, 7-11, and 11-8.
The Rams bounced back on Friday with a 5-4 win over Sewanee University. The match was tied at four all, after Fordham victories by Kinkade Webster, Carlos Ortiz, Paul Monaghan and Quetzalli Torres. Everything went down to the wire with Ross Garlick's 7th slot match against Sewanee's Harry Murth. Down two sets, Ross proceeded to claw his way back in the third set to win, 13-11. Playing aggressively, he won the fourth set, 11-5, but the fifth was neck and neck all the way to 9-9 with Garlick pulling out the last two points to give Fordham the win.
On day two, Fordham played without the services of Williams, who went out with an injury. The short-handed Rams would fall to Washington, 8-1, Johns Hopkins, 9-0, and Bucknell, 9-0.
The lone point on day two came from Monaghan, who won his second match of the weekend, defeating Washington's Jakob Lupa, 10-12, 11-2, 11-8, and 11-4.
The Fordham squash team will next be in action on November 10th, as the Rams travel to Poughkeepsie, New York for matches against Vassar (11:00 AM) and Haverford (1:00 PM).
