Bronx, N.Y. - (Oct. 25, 2012)- The Fordham swimming & diving teams kicked off the home portion of the schedule against the Marist College Red Foxes at the Messmore Aquatic Center on Thursday night. The night began with a special honoring of senior Brienne Ryan for her run at the NCAA Championship and the U.S. Olympics Trials over the summer, which then followed by the Rams sweeping the dual meet from the Red Foxes.
The Fordham men's team posted ten event wins and defeated the Red Foxes, 140-97.
The big stars of the night were freshman Steve Sholdra and sophomore Zach Jacobsen. Sholdra captured three event wins in the 1000- (9:49.79), 200- (1:42.00), and 500-yard (4:33.50) freestyle events, posting the Rams top time in the 200 and 500 freestyle. Jacobsen followed with event wins in the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.63) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.82), both in team season-best times.
Senior Thomas Yi was a part of three event wins, as individually won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.28, while taking part in both winning relays, as the 400 medley relay won in 3:31.23, while the 400 freestyle relay took the top spot in 3:11.02.
Other men's winners in the meet included senior Devon Morris in the 50-yard freestyle (21.44) and sophomore Patrick Militti in the 100 freestyle (47.82).
The Fordham women's team garnered nine event wins, in taking home a 145-96 win.
Ryan and freshman Shannon Lulley were the big catalysts to the win. Ryan won both the 100- (51.70) and 200-yard (1:53.57) freestyle events, while swimming the lead off leg of the winning 400 medley relay in 3:53.40. Lulley was a part of that relay as well as the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:39.27), while taking home first in the 200 individual medley (2:11.34).
Fordham also got wins in the 200-yard event for all three specialty strokes. Sophomore Frances Warren won the 200 butterfly in 2:07.45, with freshman Theresa Goehring taking the 200 backstroke in 2:07.45 and freshman Anna Marshall winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.73. The Rams final event winner was senior Brittany Salas in the three-meter dive, as she scored 225.30.
The Fordham swimming & diving teams will be right back in action on Friday, October 26th, when the Rams travel to Fairfield for a 5:00 PM meet against the Stags.
