Buffalo, N.Y. - (Feb. 25, 2011) - Another event filled day of swimming and diving has come to a close at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championships, held at the Flickinger Center in Buffalo, New York. In the men's competition, Fordham moved up a spot to fifth place behind a pair of second place finishes in the 100 butterfly and 400 medley relay.
Massachusetts extended its lead to 95 points over St. Bonaventure, 491.5-396.5, with one day remaining. La Salle sits in third place with 321 points, followed by George Washington (281), Fordham (265), Xavier (264), and Saint Louis (183).
Day three of competition began with the men's 400 individual medley, as Fordham had three Rams qualify for the "B" final. Michael Grimmett-Norris placed third in the race, good for 11th overall in 4:06.67, while Thomas Yi (4:11.01) and Andrew Buemi (4:14.04) finished 15th and 16th overall, respectively.
Next up was the 100 butterfly event, where once again Fordham had three qualifiers for the finals. Shintaro Noguchi posted a second place finish in the "A" final in a time of 49.56 second, just 0.04 seconds off the school record. Devon Morris would take 12th overall, as a part of the "B" final in 50.67 seconds with Chris Schneck taking 14th (51.29).
In the 200 freestyle, a pair of freshman took center stage, as Nick Belfanti made the "A" final with John Kundrat in the "B" final. Belfanti placed sixth over in a time of 1:42.00, while Kundrat was 16th overall in 1:44.32.
In the 100 backstroke, Billy Colton earned bronze in the "A" final in a time of 50.22 seconds, while Robert Gitman earned bronze in the "B" final in 51.85 seconds, placing 11th overall.
For the third time on the evening, Fordham had a trio in the finals of an event, this time in the 100 breaststroke event. Matthew Grabiak (57.47) and Ben Dwyer (57.58) took home sixth and seventh place, respectively in the "A" final, while Sean McManus tied for first in the "B" final in 57.97 seconds.
The final event of the evening was the 400 medley relay, where Colton, Grabiak, Noguchi, and Morris earned a second place finish in a school record time of 3:21.68. The previous mark was 3:22.39, set last season. Competition at the Championship will conclude on Saturday with trials at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m.
