Julian Saad Wins 2011 Men's Metropolitan Cross Country Title

Bronx, N.Y. - (Oct. 7, 2011) - When Fordham's Julian Saad crossed the finish line at the 2011 Metropolitan Cross Country Championships today he accomplished something that no other Fordham male cross country runner had done before. Win the race. Saad became the first Fordham male to win the 8K race at Van Cortlandt Park and led the Fordham men's team to a third place finish for the second straight year.

Saad blazed the course in a career-best time of 25:15, surpassing his previous career-best time of 25:45.21 set earlier this year at the Fordham Fiasco. The time was just 25.6 seconds off the Fordham school record of 24:49.4 set by Pat Lavery in 1988.

The Columbia men's won the team title with a score of 22 followed by NYU with 61 points. Fordham was third at 88 points with St. Francis in fourth (124) and Manhattan fifth (164).

On the women's side, Columbia won the team championship with 37 points followed by Rutgers at 52, St. John's at 99, Fordham with 107 points and NYU was fifth with a score of 121.

Following Saad in the men's race were four Columbia runners with Byron Jones placing second, four seconds behind Saad (25:19), Daniel Everett taking third (25:32), Adam Behnke finishing fourth (25:55) and Daniel Nestor placing fifth (25:59).

Rounding out the top ten for the men's race was NYU's Dylan Karten, who took sixth (26:00), LIU's Rogers Kipruto, who was seventh (26:01), Kyle Cooke and Casey Adams of Columbia placing eighth (26:04) and ninth (26:11), respectively, and NYU's Kevin Bonilla, who was tenth (26:12).

Other runners who scored for the Rams were Brian Riley who crossed the line in a time of 26:15 to finish eleventh, Nick Synan, who placed 26th overall in 26:41, Matt Collins, who finished 32nd in 26:58 and William Slattery, who was right behind Collins, taking 33rd in 27:00.

Also racing for the Fordham men were Rich Grandelli, who placed 42nd (27:23), Sam Stuart, who finished 43rd (27:25), Tim Kazanjian, who was 46th (27:27), Jonathan Annelli, who placed 48th (27:31), Brian Walter, who was a second behind Annelli in 49th place (27:32), Andrew Roddin, who finished 56th (27:43), Thomas Kelly, who was 59th (27:50), Devin Kelly, who placed 62nd (27:53), Ben Delikat, who finished 73rd (28:22), James Doran, who was 84th (28:42), Kevin Harvey, who crossed the line in 92nd place (29:04), Joe Hartnett, who was 93rd (29:06) and Patrick Burke, who took 95th (29:13).

Anisa Arsenault was the top Fordham finisher in the women's race, taking fourth in time of 18:32 over the 5K course, the second fastest time in her career. Her fastest time was 18:27 set last year at the Atlantic 10 Championship.

Brianna Deming from Rutgers won the women's individual title in a time of 18:05 followed by Columbia teammates Noelle Van Rysselb and Anne Carey, who took second (18:19) and third (18:24), respectively.

NYU's Kristen Keller was four seconds behind Arsenault in fifth place (18:36) followed by Anjelica Brinkofsk from Rutgers, who placed sixth (18:39). Rounding out the top ten were Seton Hall's Mary Migton in seventh (18:39), Columbia's Aryn Foland, who was eighth (18:44), Nicole Cocozza of St. John's, who was ninth (18:46) and Columbia's Madeline Rathbun, who placed tenth (18:55).

Also scoring for the Rams were Sarah Glockenmeier, who was 20th in a time of 19:15, Emily Osman, who took 27th in 19:22, Mairin O'Connor, who placed 29th in 19:32 and Nako Nakatsuka, who finished 36th in 19:45.

Other competitors for the Fordham women included Danielle Drummond, who placed 39th (19:51), Kim Naples, who was 49th (20:06), Christina Machado, who took 53rd (20:16), Jillian Brooks, who was right behind Machado in 54th place (20:16), Christina Vivinetto, who placed 77th (20:50), Kerry Sorenson, who was 86th (21:06), Siobhan Cooney, who took 88th (21:11), Shannon McKenna, who was 90th (21:15), and Olivia Hustleby and Fallon France, who finished 97th (21:51) and 98th (21:53), respectively.

The men's and women's cross country teams will return to action on Sunday, October 16th, as they compete in the St. John's Fall Festival at Cunningham Park in Queens.
