Fordham Men Finish Fourth at 2010 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship

Buffalo, N.Y. - (Feb. 20, 2010) - The Fordham men's swimming & diving team tied their best ever finish at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship, held at the Flickinger Center in Buffalo, New York, as the team placed fourth overall with 474.5 points.

Massachusetts won the team title with 814.5 points, while St. Bonaventure finished with 531.5 points for second with Duquesne, in their final A-10 Championship appearance, placing third with 496 points. Rounding out the rest of the field were Fordham, La Salle (382.5), Xavier (236), St. Louis (198) and George Washington (159.5).

The Fordham men's push for bronze began in the 1650 freestyle, where Lucien Monson, placed ninth overall in a season-best time of 16:41.84.

It was then on to the 200 backstroke, where three Rams made the "A" final, led by Robert Gitman, who finished fourth in 1:49.94. Dan Swensen placed fifth for the Rams in 1:50.40, while Billy Colton took seventh in 1:51.13.

In the 100 freestyle, Justin Coombs took fourth overall in the "A" final with a time of 45.76 seconds, while Eric Prendergast was second in the "B" final, clocking in at 46.57 seconds.

The Rams made their biggest push for third in the 200 breaststroke, where the Rams got within 5.5 points of Duquesne. Michael DiDonato led that charge with a second place in the "A" final in 2:04.21, while Sean McManus was seventh in 2:06.82. Matthew Grabiak rounded out the finalist by winning the "B" final in 2:06.21.

In the 200 butterfly, Ryan Coombs defended his title by winning the event in a season-best time of 1:50.14. Andrew Buemi also made the finals, as he took third in the "B" final (1:55.29).

Unfortunately, the Rams would fall short of Duquesne for third, as the Dukes won the final event of the evening, the 400 freestyle relay. Fordham's team of Colton, Prendergast, and the Coombs brothers took third overall in 3:02.64.
