Madison, Conn. - (Nov. 13, 2010) - The Fordham men's and women's cross country teams competed in the 2010 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship today at Hammonassett State Park where the men placed 22nd of 35 teams scoring while the women were 29th of 35 teams scoring. Brian Riley paced the men, finishing 79th overall, while Kerri Gallagher was the top Fordham women's finisher, placing 90th.
Syracuse won the men's team title with 56 points followed by Iona (63), Providence (113), Dartmouth (138) and Columbia (146). The Rams placed 22nd with 617 points, 21 points behind 21st-place Maine.
The Orange also won the women's team championship with 78 points with Stony Brook (83), Providence (87), Boston College (92) and Columbia (206) the next four team finishers. Fordham was 29th with 870 team points, just ten points behind St. John's.
The men's individual championship was won by Iona's Leonard Korir, who covered the 10K course in a time of 29:36.9, just ahead of Lee Carey from Providence (29:48.5), who was second, and Harvard's Daniel Chenoweth (29:51.2), who placed third.
Riley was the first Ram to cross the line, clocking a time of 31:53.4 while freshman Michael Belgiovine was the second Fordham finisher, placing 94th in a time of 32:01.1. Sophomore Julian Saad (141st - 32:46.0), and freshmen Ryan Polo (147th - 32:54.4) and Brian Walter (161st - 33:11.8) were the other three scores for the Rams while Casey Barrett (221st - 35:20.9) also ran.
On the women's side, Stony Brook's Lucy Van Dalen won the 6K race in a time of 19:38.4, four seconds ahead of her sister and teammate, Holly, while Shelby Greany of Providence was third (19:54.4).
Gallagher, the first Fordham woman to cross the line, placed 90th overall in a time of 22:01.5 while freshman Anisa Arsenault was the second Ram to finish, placing 148th in a time of 22:57.7. Freshman Kerry Sorenson (205th - 24:04.1), junior Nako Nakatsuka (213th - 24:25.6) and sophomore Christine Machado (25:03.8) also scored for the Rams while Ashley Davis (235th - 25:09.4) also competed in the regionals.
The Fordham men's and women's cross country teams will next be in action on Saturday, November 20th, as they host the ECAC/IC4A Championships at Van Cortlandt Park.
