Bronx, N.Y. - (Oct. 8, 2010) - The Fordham University men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 2010 Metropolitan Championship at Van Cortlandt on Friday where the men took third of 14 teams and the women were fifth of 15 teams. Individually, Anisa Arsenault was the top Fordham women, taking seventh, while Julian Saad was the top men's finisher for the Rams, placing 14th.
Columbia won the women's team title with a total of 41 points, followed by Rutgers (46), NYU (107), Iona (107) and Fordham (142).
Maeve Evans of Columbia won the women's 5K race in a time of 18:16 with Rutgers' Kelly Flanagan taking second, just a split second behind Evans. Brianna Deming, also of Rutgers, placed third in 18:30 with Alex Crawley from Columbia finishing fourth and Rutgers' Jennifer Spitzer placing fifth in 18:44.
The top Fordham finisher was Arsenault, who took seventh in a time of 18:47. Senior Kerri Gallagher was the next Ram across the line, placing eleventh in 19:05 while Nako Nakatsuka was third for Fordham, finishing 45th overall in 20:19.
Also scoring for the Rams were Ashley Davis and Johanne Sterling, who placed 51st and 52nd overall, with identical 20:30 times.
Other competitors for the Fordham women included Diane Bain (59th - 20:49), Kerry Sorenson (64th - 20:57), Kim Naples (66th - 21:01), Kerry Kwalwasser (70th - 21:04), Christina Machado (74th - 21:10), Christina Vivinetto (79th - 21:24), Jana Trenk (83rd - 21:30), Mairin O'Connor (91st - 21:49), Fallon France (94th - 21:55), Kelly Heimrich (99th - 22:05), Olivia Hustleby (102nd - 22:12), Amanda Foggia (104th - 22:16), Shannon McKenna (107th - 22:21), Kelly Connolly (111th - 22:37), Claire Nielsen (121st - 22:58) and Siobhan Cooney (124th - 23:32).
In the men's race, Columbia also won the team title with 17 points while New York University was second with 70 points and Fordham third with 101. Rounding out the top five were Rutgers (110) and Iona (120).
Individually Columbia had the top four men's finishers with Mark Feigen (25:46), Patrick Desabetto (25:56), Leighton Spencer (25:58) and Johnny Gregorek (26:01) the first four runners to cross the line of the 8K course while NYU's Seb Schwelm took fifth in 26:02.
Saad was the first Ram to finish, placing 14th overall in a season-best time of 26:30. Kevin Fitzgerald and Michael Belgiovine were the next two Fordham runners to complete the course, placing 20th (26:42) and 21st (26:45) overall, respectively.
Also scoring for the Fordham men were Casey Barrett, who placed 29th overall (27:03) and Ryan Polo, who was 34th overall (27:16).
