Bethpage, N.Y. - (Sept. 19, 2009) - The Fordham cross country team took first place overall in both the men's and women's races at the NYIT Running of the Bears Cross Country Meet at Bethpage State Park on Saturday. The men were first out of 20 teams, while the women were first out of 19 teams.
In the men's race, NYIT's Rono Daniel captured the individual title with a time of 25:26.70 over the 8K course.
For Fordham, Clifton Hilario was the top finisher in ninth place with a time of 26:21.80. The Rams then finished 10th, 11th, and 12th, respectively, as Kevin Fitzgerald (26:24.20), Julian Saad (26:24.60), and Paul Szczepaniak (26:30.40) all crossed the line with a six second span. The Rams had three other top 20 finishes, as Tim Hartnett was 17th (26:47.70), Ryan Campi was 18th (26:48.50), and Sam Stuart was 20th (26:59.50).
In the women's race, NYIT's Cherutich Jeptui was the individual winner, clocking in at 17:56.50 over the 5K run.
Not far from the top spot, Fordham's
Brigid Moriarty (19:11.30) and
Kerri Gallagher (19:11.40) placed third and fourth, respectively, while
Sheena Parand was 17th overall in 20:31.40. The Rams had four other runners place in the top 25 finishers, as
Nako Nakatsuka was 19th (20:34.00),
Ashley Davis was 21st (20:38.50),
Mairin O'Connor was 23rd (20:46.30), and
Dana Mitchell was 25th (20:52.50).
The Fordham cross country teams will next be in action on Saturday, September 26th, as they compete in the Leeber Invitational, host by Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut.
