Bronx, N.Y. - (Sept. 12, 2009) - The Fordham University men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2009 season by hosting the Fordham Fiasco at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday. Sacred Heart won the men's team title with Fordham placing fourth while Penn took the women's team championship with the host Rams finishing seventh.
Kevin Cronin from Rutgers won the men's individual title, crossing the line in a time of 26:55.54 for the 8K race with teammate Nick Miehe right behind him, taking second in 27:00.02. NYIT's Daniel Rond placed third (27:19.60) with Andrew Houghtalen from Sacred Heart finishing fourth (27:21.06) and Fordham's Clifton Hilario placing fifth (27:25.11).
In the women's individual competition, NYIT's Jeptui Cherutich was first across the finish line, covering the 5K course in a time of 18:07.13. Mel Newbery of Princeton took second (18:16.19) while the next three finishers were from Penn with Leslie Kovach taking third (18:25.98), Anna Aagenes placing fourth (18:27.52) and Laura Bilder finishing fifth (18:32.18).
In the men's team competition Sacred Heart won with a score of 64, followed by East Stroudsburg (89), Rutgers (94), Fordham (117), Penn (118) and Saint Joseph's (163). Rounding out the top ten were NY Tech (188), Ramapo (243), Rowan (271) and Long Island (295).
On the women's side, Penn won with a team score of 30, followed by Princeton (63), Columbia (118), Rutgers (121), Rowan (167) and Sacred Heart (175). Rounding out the women's top ten were Fordham (201), NY Tech (215), East Stroudsburg (222) and Georgian Court (289).
For the Fordham men, Kevin Fitzgerald was the second Ram across the line, taking eighth in a time of 27:32.65 while Julian Saad placed 25th in 28:06.80. Also scoring for the Fordham men were Sam Stuart (35th - 28:17.66) and Ryan Campi (44th - 28:24.65). Other competitors for the men included Matt Collins (51st - 28:32.70), Tim Hartnett (52nd - 28:36.10), Rich Grandelli (59th - 28:55.12), Paul Szczepaniak (63rd - 29:03.03), Nick Synan (72nd - 29:12.49), Casey Barrett (80th (29:19.41), Erik Lawrence (89th - 29:34.34), Andrew Roddin 100th - 30:06.67), Michael Walsh (110th - 30:23.52) and Andrew Chung (123rd - 30:49.32).
Brigid Moriarty was the first Fordham woman across the finish line, taking18th in a time of 19:04.41 while Kerri Gallagher was just behind her, placing 21st in a time of 19:12.13. Also scoring for the Fordham women were Mairin O'Connor (59th - 20:28.95), Dana Mitchell (67th - 20:39.91) and Sheena Parand (72nd - 20:49.52). Other competitors for the Fordham women included Ashley Davis (74th - 20:54.45), Nako Nakatsuka (80th - 21:00.94), Kim Naples (90th - 21:23.15), Johanne Sterling (103rd - 21:48.41) and Bridget Carroll (113th - 22:04.17).
The Fordham men's and women's cross country squads will next be in action next Saturday, September 19th, as they complete in the Running of the Bears Invitational at Bethpage State Park on Long Island beginning at 11:00 a.m.
