Bronx, N.Y. - (Feb. 4, 2009) - Prior to the meet with St. Francis on Wednesday night, Fordham University honored its senior members who were making their final appearance at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatics Center. Later that night, the seniors gave back to the crowd by leading the Rams to a sweep of the Terriers, with the women winning 136-85 and the men coming out ahead by a 132-72 score.
Seniors played a big role in the Fordham victories with two senior men winning events for Fordham along with one senior women. Leading the way for the men was senior Brad Heyman, who won two events, placing first in the 100 back (57.01) and 200 IM (2:05.06), while classmate Sean Terry took gold in the 100 breaststroke (59.93).
On the women's side, Elena Muñoz was victorious in the 100 breaststroke in her final home meet (1:11.21).
Ryan Coombs and Benjamin Otto were also dual event winners for the Rams, with Coombs touching first in both the 50 free (21.71) and 100 fly (52.20) while Otto placed first on both the one (285.60) and three (303.30) meter boards. Other men placing first for the Rams included Justin Coombs, who won the 200 free (1:45.94), Billy Colton, who took first in the 100 free (48.23), and Brendan O'Morchoe, who was first to the wall in the 500 free (5:00.69).
In the relays, the team of Justin Coombs, Sean McManus, Jon Castaldo and Ryan Coombs won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:36.35 while the team of Castaldo, McManus, Dan Swensen and Justin Coombs placed first in the 200 free relay in a time of 1:30.65.
On the women's side,
Caitlin Napoli took first in two events, winning the 50 free (25.10) and 100 back (1:00.07). Other winners included
Tressa Dunn, who won the 200 free (1:54.11),
Emily Wojdyla, who was first in the 500 free (5:14.74), Guilia Kaftan, who was victorious in the 1000 free (11:13.17),
Danielle Forrest, winner of the 200 IM (2:15.08),
Courtney Collyer, who touched first in the 100 fly (58.37),
Elizabeth Dorger, who scored highest on the one meter board (269.55) and
Andrea Krok, who took first on the three meter board (281.55).
In women's relays, the 200 medley relay of
Christina Cosentino, Dunn, Collyer and
Kelly Bunster placed first in a time of 1:51.99 as did the 200 free relay of
Rebekah Weiner, Cosentino,
Carolyn Passaro and
Nicole Marshall in a time of 1:44.41.
The men's and women's swimming and diving squad will next be in action on Wednesday, February 18th, as they compete in the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championships to be held at the Flickinger Center in Buffalo from the 18th through the 21st.
