St. Louis, Mo. - (Oct. 31, 2009) - The Fordham cross country teams made the trek to St. Louis for the 2009 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships on Saturday, as the men placed 12th out of 14 teams, while the women were 10th out of 14 squads. The highlight of the day was senior
Brigid Moriarty, as she placed sixth overall, becoming only the second Fordham women's runner to earn Cross Country All-Atlantic 10 honors.
Saint Joseph's University and the University of Dayton picked up the men's and women's team titles, respectively, at the 2009 Championships held at a wet and muddy Forest Park in St. Louis. It was the first team title for the Saint Joseph's men's squad since 2000, while Dayton captured their first-ever A-10 cross country title.
On the women's side, George Washington's Megan Hogan ran away with the individual title, posting a time of 18:37.8 and outdistancing the second-place finisher by more than 50 seconds. Courtney Baldwin of Massachusetts claimed Rookie of the Year honors after finishing in 20:09.6, which was good for ninth overall.
Dayton totaled 72 points, finishing ahead of second-place Charlotte (98) and third-place Massachusetts (109). Duquesne placed fourth with 114 points, while La Salle finished fifth with 153 points. Richmond (157), Saint Joseph's (184), George Washington (185), Xavier (207) and Fordham (226) rounded out the top 10. Saint Louis finished 11th, with Rhode Island placing 12th, Temple 13th and St. Bonaventure 14th.
Earning All-Conference honors on the women's side for finishing in the top 15 were: Hogan (George Washington), Amanda Goetschius (Charlotte), Maura Bulgrin (Dayton), Katie Kelly (Duquesne), Caitlin Thomas (Xavier),
Brigid Moriarty (Fordham), Nicol Traynor (Richmond), Jessica Stern (George Washington), Baldwin (Massachusetts), Elissa Mason (Dayton), Liz Coorey (Dayton), Meg Ecker (Duquesne), Hilary Orf (Saint Louis), Caitlin Storbeck (La Salle) and Samantha Gallagher (La Salle).
Moriarty was sixth overall in a time of 20:01.9, as she joined Claudine Kelly (1995) as the only Rams to earn All-Atlantic 10 cross country honors. Fordham's
Kerri Gallagher just missed out on All-Conference accolades, finishing 18th overall in 20:39.6, followed by
Sheena Parand (21:27.7 - 51st),
Kim Naples (22:05.6 - 83rd),
Mairin O'Connor 22:17.3 - 90th),
Christina Machado (23:03.3 - 112th),
Nako Nakatsuka (23:38.2 - 121st),
Dana Mitchell (23:42.0 - 122nd),
Bridget Carroll (23:51.3 - 125th), and
Ashley Davis (24:41.1 - 130th).
On the men's side, Dayton's Chris Lemon won the men's individual title with a time of 26:13.3, while Lemon's teammate, freshman Greg Roeth, earned Rookie of the Year honors after finishing 25th overall with a time of 27:38.3.
SJU, which accumulated 56 points, were trailed by last year's champion UMass (67) and Dayton (70). La Salle placed fourth with 119 points, while Temple finished fifth with 120 points. Duquesne (167), Charlotte (171), Richmond (203), Xavier (239) and George Washington (294) rounded out the top 10. Saint Louis finished 11th, with Fordham placing 12th, Rhode Island 13th and St. Bonaventure 14th.
Fordham's Clifton Hilario led the Rams with a 36th-place showing (28:02.6). Kevin Fitzgerald was the next Ram across the line at 28:50.3 (82nd), followed by Julian Saad (28:57.0 - 89th), Tim Hartnett (28:57.5 - 90th), John Korevec (29:05.6 - 95th), Paul Szczepaniak (29:17.8 - 103rd), Sam Stuart (29:31.6 - 108th), and Casey Barrett (29:54.4 - 121st).
The Fordham cross country teams will next be in action on Saturday, November 14th, as they compete at the NCAA District Regional in Boston, Massachusetts.
