Storrs, Conn. - (Oct. 24, 2009) - The Fordham swimming & diving teams continued their busy opening weekend at the Husky Invitational on Saturday. The Fordham men's team placed first out of five teams, while the women finished second to UConn.
On the men's side, Fordham won with 714 followed by UConn with 683.5, Providence with 275.5, Fairfield with 242 and Merchant Marine with 173.
UConn won the women's portion of the event with 826 points followed by Fordham with 765.5, Fairfield with 278.5, Providence with 197 and Merchant Marine with 52.
The men were led to victory by Ryan Coombs and Lucien Monson, who each won an event for the Rams. Ryan Coombs won the 100 fly in a time of 51.47 while also placing second in the 100 free (47.47) and third in the 200 fly (1:57.56). Monson won the 1000 free, touching the pad in a time of 10:05.94, and placed third in the 500 free (4:55.43).
Other top three finishers for the men included Justin Coombs, who was second in the 50 free (21.78) and the 200 IM (1:45.92) while placing third in the 100 free (47.75); Michael DiDonato, who took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.15); Sean McManus, who placed second in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.62) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.10); Robert Gitman, who was second in the 200 back (1:55.72) and Billy Colton, who was third in the 100 (52.56) and 200 back (2:01.19).
In the 200 free relay, the Fordham "A" team of Ryan Coombs, Colton, Devon Morris and Justin Coombs won in a time of 1:25.52 while the "B" team of Eric Prendergast, Patrick Mulligan, Thomas Yi and Rami Fetyani finished fifth (1:30.00).
On the women's side, the Rams had eight event winners, led by
Courtney Collyer and
Kelly Bunster who won two events each. Collyer won the won the 200 fly in 2:03.6 and the 400 IM in 4:32.47 while Bunster won the 100 fly in 57.91 and the 100 free in 53.43 while tying for third in the 50 free (24.58).
Other winners for the women were
Caitlin Napoli, who won the 500 free in 5:05.36 and took second in the 200 fly (2:07.06);
Christina Cosentino, who took first in the 100 back in 59.17,
Brienne Ryan, who won the 200 back in a time of 2:06.07 and placed second in both the 50 free (24.54) and the 100 fly (58.32);
Nicole Marshall, who touched first in the 200 IM in a time of 2:08.61 and took second in the 100 (1:06.59) and the 200 breaststroke (2:23.94).
Other Fordham women who placed in the top three included
Tressa Dunn, who second in the 200 free (1:56.53);
Megan McGorry, who was second in the 1000 free (10:30.12) and third in the 500 free (5:08.14);
Alexandra Alessi, who took third in the 200 free (1:58.37) and
Natazia Fistrovic, who was third in the 400 IM (4:51.64).
In the women's 200 free relay, the "A" team of Bunster, Ryan, Napoli and Dunn placed first in a time of 1:38.20 while the Fordham "B" team of Cosentino, Alessi,
Lara Moseley and
Kellie Lyver placed fifth (1:42.32).
The Rams will next be inaction on Wednesday, November 11th, as they host Stony Brook in the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatics Center at 5:00 PM.
