Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - (Oct. 22, 2009) - The Fordham swimming & diving teams got their 2009-10 season underway on Thursday at Marist College, as the Rams split their opening meet. The women defeated the Red Foxes, 160-83, while the men were just edged out in the final race, 125.5-115.5.
The Fordham women dominated their side of the meet, having three double winners, while sweeping the diving and relay events.
In their first meet for Fordham, transfer
Megan McGorry won both the 1000 (10:24:35) and 500 (5:06.72) freestyle events, while
Brienne Ryan took first in the 50 (24:67) freestyle and 200 backstroke (2:04.90) events.
Courtney Collyer picked up right where she left off last season, winning both the 200 individual medley (2:08.88) and the 200 butterfly races (2:06.67).
In diving, Fordham's
Andrea Krok won the three-meter dive (237.60), while
Elizabeth Dorger took the one-meter competition (237.59).
In the relays, Fordham's 400 medley team of Ryan,
Nicole Marshall,
Kelly Bunster, and
Tressa Dunn took first (3:53.13), as did the 400 freestyle relay team ((3:36.70) (
Kellie Lyver, Bunster, Allie Alessi, and
Caitlin Napoli).
On the men's side, the final race ended up being the difference, as Marist won the 400 freestyle relay to take the meet by ten.
For Fordham, Ryan Coombs and Justin Coombs each had an event win, while just getting touched out for a second victory. Ryan Coombs won the 200 freestyle(1:45.79), while placing second in the 200 butterfly (1:57.81), while Justin Coombs won the 100 freestyle (48.04) and took second in the 50 freestyle (22:04).
The Rams also dominated the 200 backstroke and 200 breaststroke events. The Rams took first (1:56.30) (Robert Gitman), second (1:57.23)(Billy Colton) and fourth (1:59.54) in the 200 backstroke, while finishing first (2:15.36) (Matthew Grabiak), second (2:16.69) (Sean McManus), and third (2:18.77)(Joseph Hines) in the 200 breaststroke.
Fordham also won the men's 400 medley relay (3:33.36) behind the efforts of Colton, McManus, and the Coombs brothers.
The Fordham swimming and diving teams will next be in action on Friday, October 23rd as they host a tri-meet with Fairfield and St. Peter's at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center at 6:00 PM.
