Men's & Women's Swimming Take Fifth at 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships

Buffalo, N.Y. - (Feb. 23, 2008) - The Fordham University men's and women's swimming and diving squads wrapped up competition at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships at the Flickinger Athletic Center with each squad placing fifth in the team standings.

Both the Richmond women and the Massachusetts men extended their consistency at the Atlantic 10 Championships, as the Spiders were crowned the conference champions for the seventh consecutive year, while the Minutemen won for the seventh time in the past eight seasons. Massachusetts finished with a total of 791.5 points and Richmond accumulated 690.5 points.

Xavier claimed second in the women's team competition with 488 points followed by third place Duquesne's 470. The Dukes were followed by Massachusetts (420.5), Fordham (414), St. Bonaventure (308), La Salle (225), Rhode Island (215), Saint Louis (214) and George Washington (189).

St. Bonaventure finished with 567.5 points earning second place in the men's standings, with Xavier placing third with 426.5 points. Rounding out the rest of the field were Duquesne (402), Fordham (357), La Salle (332), Rhode Island (287.5), Saint Louis (257) and George Washington (174).

On the final day of competition one more school record fell as Nicole Marshall, who set the school 200 IM record on Thursday, set her second school record at the championships, taking fourth in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:19.73. She surpassed the old record of 2:20.38 set by Elizabeth Lehre in 1997. Marshall was also a part of both the 200 and 400 medley relays which set school records at the championships.

Also scoring for the Fordham women were Tressa Dunn, who placed fourth in the 100 free (52.00); Caitlin Napoli, who was fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:05.91); Christina Cosentino, who placed fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:03.30); Marisa Colangelo, who took fifth on the one meter board (405.25); Ashley Ukleja, who finished sixth in the 1650 free (17:35.36); Anne Conroy, who placed ninth in the 1650 free (17:42.90); Natazia Fistrovic, who was tenth in the 200 butterfly (2:08.03); Alexandria Ukleja, who finished 12th in the 1650 free (17:44.64); Katelynn Gray, who took 13th in the 200 butterfly (2:09.16); Kristin Colton, who placed 13th in the 200 backstroke (2:07.73) and Kim Bouton, who was 16th in the 200 butterfly (2:12.15).

In women's relays, the 400 free relay of Dunn, Amanda Ciccone, Amanda Irving and Napoli took sixth in 3:31.63.

Leading the men on the final day were Ryan Coombs and Lucien Monson, who placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 1650 free in times of 16:04.56 and 16:05.91, respectively.

Also scoring for the men were Robert Gitman, who was fifth in the 200 backstroke (1:51.98); Sean Terry, who took eighth in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.75); Justin Coombs, who finished tenth in the 100 free (46.24); Andrew Buemi, who placed eleventh in the 1650 free (16:37.03); Tim Gusick, who took 13th in the 1650 free (16:41.43) and Eric Prendergast, who was 16th in the 100 free (47.31).

In men's relays, the 400 free relay of Ryan Coombs, Prendergast, Brian Jucas and Justin Coombs took sixth in a time of 3:06.83.
