Swimming & Diving Closes Out Day Three of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships

Buffalo, N.Y. - (Feb. 22, 2008) - The Fordham University men's and women's swimming and diving squads competed on day three of the 208 Atlantic 10 Championships at the Flickinger Athletic Center with the women standing in fourth place after day three while the men are in fifth place.

For the women, the Spiders are atop the standings with 465 points, a 134 point lead over second place Xavier. The Musketeers are followed by Duquesne (304), Fordham (273), Massachusetts (271), St. Bonaventure (222), La Salle (160), Rhode Island (158), George Washington (136) and Saint Louis (133).

Massachusetts continues to lead on the men's side with a total of 577.5 points, 156 points ahead of second place St. Bonaventure. Rounding out the rest of the men's standings are Duquesne (292), Xavier (282.5), Fordham (259), La Salle (243), Rhode Island (205.5), Saint Louis (152) and George Washington (133).

Two school records fell on day three, one individual and one relay. Donato Callara was responsible for the individual record, placing third on the one meter board with a score of 592.40, breaking the former record of 535.35 set by Paul Delo in 1997. It was the second school record set at the championships by Callara, who also set the one meter record, scoring 562.55 in the event day one, placing second to earn All-Atlantic 10 honors.

In the relay record, the women's' 400 medley relay squad of Christina Cosentino, Nicole Marshall, Caitlin Napoli and Tressa Dunn took third in a time of 3:51.86, breaking the old school record of 3:55.83 set in 2003.

Leading the Fordham women individually was Cosentino, who placed third in the 100 backstroke in 57.00 seconds while Napoli took fourth in the 200 free in a time of 1:52.38.

Other women scoring for the Rams were Marshall, who placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.47); Dunn, who was sixth in the 200 free (1:53.59); Amanda Irving, who placed eighth in the 200 free (1:55.23); Marina Montoya, who finished ninth in the 400 IM (4:35.67); Katelynn Gray, who took 13th in the 100 butterfly (58.60); Kim Bouton, who was 15th in the 100 butterfly (58.82) and Kristin Colton, who placed 15th in the 100 backstroke (59.15).

Leading the Fordham men were Ryan Coombs, who took fourth in the 200 free in a time of 1:41.10, and Sean Terry, who placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 57.60 seconds.

Also scoring for the men were Robert Gitman, who was sixth in the 100 backstroke (52.37); Justin Coombs, who finished seventh in the 200 free (1:42.13); Eric Prendergast, who took 14th in the 400 IM (4:14.46) and Kyle Silbernagel, who placed 14th in the 100 butterfly (52.36) and 16th in the 100 backstroke (53.85).

In men's relays, the 400 medley team of Gitman, Terry, Ryan Coombs and Justin Coombs placed fourth in a time of 3:25.15.

The championships conclude on Saturday with the evening finals at 6:30 p.m. Morning trials will start at 10:30 a.m. with doors opening at the Flickinger Center at 9:15 a.m. For live streaming video and coverage of the event, visit www.atlantic10.org.
