Bronx, N.Y. - (Oct. 23, 2008) - The Fordham swimming and diving teams swept their meet against Marist College on Thursday evening at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center. The Fordham women defeated Marist, 143-95, while the men edged the Red Foxes, 129-112.
The meet started off well for both Fordham squads as the women's and men's 400 medley relay teams won their event. The women's team, comprised of
Christina Cosentino,
Nicole Marshall,
Kelly Bunster, and
Tressa Dunn, won in a time of 3:56.63, while the men's team of Billy Colton, Sean Terry, Ryan Coombs and Justin Coombs, won in a time of 3:31.64.
After Marist took both 1000 freestyle events, Fordham won four straight races, which started with
Caitlin Napoli taking the 200 freestyle in 1:52.90. Ryan Coombs followed with a win in the men's 200 freestyle in 1:44.14. In the 50 freestyle, Fordham's
Kelly Bunster won in 24.88, while Justin Coombs placed first in 21.91.
In the 200 IM,
Courtney Collyer picked up an event win for Fordham in 2:08.89, while Eric Prendergast took second in the men's competition (2:00.45).
Napoli then picked up her second event win of the evening in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:05.57.
In the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke, Fordham swept the event wins.
Tressa Dunn won the women's 100 in 53.50, while Justin Coombs won his second event in 47.61. In the 200 backstroke, Cosentino took the women's event in 2:09.00, while Robert Gitman was first in the men's competition (1:55.33).
In the diving events, Fordham's
Andrea Krok won both the 1M and 3M women's competitions with scores of 244.38 and 243.75. On the men's side, Ben Otto was second in both competitions with scores of 263.33 (1M) and 299.36 (3M).
With the Fordham women in control, it was up to the 200 men's breaststroke to decide the meet for the Rams. Fordham came through with first through third place finishes to clinch the win, led by Matthew Grabiak's first place time of 2:14.86.
The Fordham swimming and diving teams will return to action on Friday, October 24th, as they have a meet at St. Peter's College, beginning at 6:00 PM.
