Piscataway, N.J. - (Oct. 11, 2008) - The Fordham swimming & diving teams got their 2008-09 season underway this weekend at the Sonny Werblin Invitational, hosted by Rutgers University. No team scores were kept. In total, Fordham won four events in the women's competition, while the Fordham men placed first in 11 events.
In the women's competition, Fordham had at least one top five finisher in all but two events. In the freestyle events,
Kelly Bunster won the 100 freestyle in 53.25 seconds, while tying for second in the 50 freestyle with fellow teammate
Tressa Dunn in 24.68 seconds. In the 200 and 500 freestyle,
Caitlin Napoli was the top Fordham finisher, taking second in the 200 (1:56.91) and fourth in the 500 (5:07.82).
In the backstroke,
Christina Cosentino was the top Fordham finisher, placing fourth in the 100 (59.66) and fifth in the 200 (2:10.69).
Nicole Marshall topped everyone in the breaststroke, placing first in the 100 in 1:07.61, as well as first in the 200 in 2:26.71.
In the butterfly, Napoli won the 200 butterfly in 2:06.72, while Bunster was second in the 100 butterfly (58.44).
Courtney Collyer was the top Ram in the 200 individual medley, placing fourth in a time of 2:09.42.
In the diving competition,
Elizabeth Dorger was the top Fordham diver, taking second in the 1M (237.55) and third in the 3M (221.20).
In the relays, Fordham placed second in all four relays (200 MR - 1:50.88, 400 MR - 3:58.69, 200 FR R - 1:38.43, 400 FR R - 3:38.16).
For the men, Ryan Coombs and Justin Coombs dominated the freestyle events. Justin placed first in the 50 freestyle (21.92), second in both the 100 (48.00) and 200 (1:45.93) freestyle, and fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:50.28). Ryan took first in the 100 and 200 freestyles in 47.94 and 1:45.50, respectively, while placing second in the 500 freestyle in 4:48.92. Lucien Monson wrapped up the freestyle events by taking second in the 1650 in 16:55.41.
Justin Coombs added another second place finish to his day in the 100 backstroke (54.96), while Ryan Coombs was first in the 100 butterfly (52.42) and second in the 200 butterfly (1:59.36).
In the breaststroke, Sean Terry won the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.48, while taking third in the 200 (2:18.93). Eric Prendergast then wrapped up the swimming events with a win in the 200 individual medley in 2:03.38.
In diving, Ben Otto placed first in the 1M with a score of 248.45, while Anthony Giovannone was first in the 3M with a score of 233.05.
In relay action, Fordham placed first in all four relays (200 MR - 1:38.21, 400 MR - 3:37.75, 200 FR R - 1:27.56, 400 FR R - 3:16.91).
The Fordham swimming and diving teams will next be in action on Thursday, October 23rd, when they host Marist for a 7:00 PM meet.
