Philadelphia, Pa. - (Oct. 27, 2007) - La Salle's Rachel Papin and David Alfano each placed second in their respective races as La Salle overcame heavy rain and wet conditions to defend its titles at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Belmont Plateau. Fordham placed 10th out of 14 teams on the men's side and 11th out of 14 for the women.
The La Salle women's team claimed its fourth consecutive crown, amassing 52 points, while Richmond had 82 points for its second runner-up showing in as many years. Xavier finished third with 119 points, followed by Charlotte (123), Duquesne (132), Massachusetts (167), Saint Louis (178), Saint Joseph's (189), George Washington (194), Dayton (266), Fordham (274), Rhode Island (317), Temple (379) and St. Bonaventure (464).
For Fordham, Brigid Moriarty took home top honors, as she finished in 23rd place in 19:43.0, followed by Melissa Salerno in 47th in 20:28. Emily Kolodgy came in 53rd place in 20:38, while Susanne Hansen was 79th (21:06), Jacqueline Prevete was 91st (21:29), and Kerri Gallagher finished 94th (21:32). Also competing for Fordham were Kristin Pezzutti (96th - 21:35), Kelsey Komich (100th - 21:41), and Catalina Hallock (124th - 22:56).
On the men's side, La Salle won its second straight title and fifth in the past six years as five Explorers finished in the top 15.
La Salle finished with 37 points, while Richmond (54) was second. Duquesne and Massachusetts tied for third place with 91 points, followed by Saint Joseph's (164), Dayton (199), George Washington (210), Xavier (221), Charlotte (222), Fordham (270), Temple (298), Saint Louis (310), Rhode Island (349) and St. Bonaventure (465).
For Fordham, Matt Lowenthal was the top Rams' finisher, placing 48th overall in 27:14, followed by Matt Flynn in 52nd in 27:20. Tom Finnerty was next in 59th place (27:28), with Casey Barrett (81st - 28:01), Patrick McDonough (85th - 28:08), Tim Hartnett (96th - 28:28), Tim Burke (107th - 28:42), and Justin Kopunek (116th - 29:06) also competing for Fordham.
The Fordham cross country teams will next be in action on Saturday, November 10th, as they compete at the NCAA District Qualifier at Franklin Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
