Bronx, N.Y. – (September 29, 2006) – After three rainouts, the Fordham Women's Tennis team finally got the 2006-07 season underway. Unfortunately, Fordham opened with a 6-1 loss to the University of Rhode Island on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts on Friday afternoon.
Rhode Island started the match by winning two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles' point. Rhode Island's Grace Hedstrom and Nyssa Peele defeated Fordham's Lisa Vulin and Doina Sandor, 8-0,at second doubles, while Amanda Barletta and Stef Catanzano topped Martina Featherston and Elizabeth Stall, 8-2, at third doubles. Fordham's Dominique Liguori and Ellenoira Featherston did win the final doubles' match, 8-6, over Lara Maurer and Valerie Chacon.
In singles' play, Fordham got on the board early as Ellenoira Featherston won at second singles over Chacon, 6-3, 6-2. That however would be the only Fordham win during the singles, as Rhode Island won the other five matches in straight sets.
The Fordham Women's Tennis team will next in action on Saturday, October 14th, as they host NJIT at the Hawthorn/Rooney Tennis Courts.
